got a new laptop win 11 home 16gb ram i7 geforce gtx 6gb dedicated gpu ram, fresh install sketchup 26 current build. First ran with onboard video and default graphic settings. Ran ok. Updated to GTX card and new graphic settings and ran well. This was with only 8gb ram. Upgraded to 16gb ram in dual (2 chips same size). After restart tried running sketchup getting bug splat on start. Tried removing plugins, and setting windows graphics to onboard defaults - still splat. and then to Dedicated Video and force hardware usage - still splat.

Well, these are about 9-10 years old things. I certainly wouldn’t call them new. If someone sold them to you as new, they must have cleared out an old warehouse…
In any case, that shouldn’t cause it to crash. But since the crashes started when you added the RAM, it is reasonable to suspect that a faulty RAM module is the cause.
Yes, its not “New” just new to me. It came with only 8gb ram but it was able to run Sketchup and the dedicated GPU with 6gb handled it rather well. I had another laptop with same style of ram but 16gb, so i swapped them. Both systems ran fine, system info reads all memory installed. Just getting bug splats. I was hoping it was something else but the ram was the only thing changed, so if no other explanation fits I suppose I will downgrade and retest ( looking for a deal on 32b of ddr4 if anyone has a good source - thank you dezmo
looks like there is a video driver update from Nvidia 10/14/25. I did run a lot of windows updates including 25H2 form 24H2, and bios, network adapter and video drivers. I am purchasing 32gb ram tonight as well as trying the new video driver… fingers crossed:
FYI, this is the last maintenance update (excepting security updates) that we’ll get from Nvidia for our GTX 1060 GPUs. (I have this in my MSi gaming notebook which is like 8 years old now. Time flies.) There’ll be no more security updates after October 2028.
Basically, all Pascal based GPUs are obsolete and considered by Nvidia as near end of life.
I’m looking for deals on something newer with a RTX 5050 minimum.
Thanks Dan. Found that today. Just got home and installing it now. I saw a security update too more recent. I’ll try after this. I was excited about 6gb dedicated memory but I should have researched better to learn end of life…
out of curiosity, do you have 1001bits tools installed ? and if so, can you turn it off ?
I ran into this case earlier this week, a guy with a 4500€ PC did a fresh install, added his older plugins, added a couple of ours, and then SU started crashing on startup.
turns out deactivating 1001bits solved it.
after checking, he was using the free version, last updated in 2019. you’ll also find a case on the forum where the tool itself broke because of another plugin installed at the same time.
I don’t think it is plug-in related, as I altered the plug folder name and tried to run SketchUp, and it immediately splat. Windows, Ram and driver updates we the only things that changed from it running to not running. I just changed the Ram so I believe that can be dismissed. I Downloaded video driver direct from Nvidia so I believe that could be dismissed. Windows updates are the last bits unconfirmed. Other than video setting configurations. I have tried all on full 3d maxed out, and all off basic generic onboard defaults. So I am leaning towards window updates…
Thank you Adam. I will try that when I get to my machine tonight. I don’t have Visual Studio Code installed yet on this machine, but I plan to. Not sure if that would be a prerequisite to this issue, but I’ll try anything at this point.
no, it’s not in relation to having Visual Studio SDK or Visual Studio code, it’s more to do with parts of the program having been coded in C++ in visual studio and thus requires access to this file as it’s part of the supporting framwork.
That file is often removed by “helpful” cleaning and optimisation tools or gets corrupted or goes wrong in some windows way. Normally it would be installed as part of SketchUp, but sometimes installing it from Microsoft directly will fix it.
Got ya. And I almost brought my laptop to work in case the forum found a solution, I should have known better and brought it. No I get to sit in anticipation for 8 hours waiting to try the cure… I appreciate your help.
Interestingly, the guy that sits opposite me in the office had his 2D CAD software crash because of this yesterday.
And to just chuck something else into the ring, (for possible future crash issues people may encounter) if you have ASUS Armory Crate installed on your PC it can cause problems.
Ok, so i tried to install the vc-red… but it said there was a version running. So i found the one from 2015 and uninstalled it. then the install went ok. tried to run Sketchup and it said missing a runtime file (what i deleted i suppose) so i uninstalled sketchup, restarted windows. reinstalled sketchup. and noticed it installed the vc-red again during the re-install. But this time it loaded, and i have it working again. So cant say which step got it, but thank you and hopefully this can help someone else with a bug-splat.
Thanks for getting back to me Colin. I appreciate you. Before this I was able to get into SketchUp. I will try again tonight and if there is a hiccup I will follow your instructions.
