I am struggling to find architectural symbols to ad to my scrapbook. I need items like a symbol for insulation without having to create my own.
Have you tried online sources such as CADdetails? Note without more information re: what type of insulation symbol you need, it will be harder to help point you to any specific results.
See CADdetails return search of 867 items:
Followup…Personally, I like to calculate a cost (in time) to search, filter, find and vet something made elsewhere (FT) …against cost (in time) to draw from scratch (DT)… against cost to buy a quality pre-drawn set (in dollars) ($)…and see what makes the most sense in terms of Value (V) to my process, end product and budget/profit.
FT = Find Time
DT = Draw Time
$ = Purchase Cost
T$ = Time Cost
V = Value
Let’s run an example calculation with my billing rate say at $100/hr and my take home or profit at say $50/hr = my Time Cost (T$).
Let’s assume some other variables. A quality CAD detail set may cost something like 15 GBP, say $20…that’s 40% of my hourly profit which = 24 mins of my time (T).
This gives me a benchmark to work with: 24 mins. Can I search, find, download, and vet a better detail in less time FT<24? Can I draw what I need with the right amount of detail in less time DT<24? Is there value (+)(V) in knowing HOW to draw it myself even if DT>24=+V?
I’m aware this is more than you asked for so thank you for entertaining my response.
This at SketchUcation is a good [old but still working?] scrapbook…

It’s actually quite easy to make one’s own symbols using Layout’s drawing tools.
Although making my own insulation batt symbol – to my liking – involved digging out one of my old technical geometry books.
Thank you! It sure has a lot of useful stuff on there except the one I need today!
I have found a lot of stuff but for some reason I could not find a simple fiberglass insulation graphic. I can draw a lot of the stuff but that one was taking too long as I am still learning this. So right now anything I draw is going slower than expected.
Can an insulation material in SU suffice? Like a rockwool texture perhaps?
I dug this out – does it help…?
insulation_batt.layout (28.2 KB)
That’s what I have been looking for. I didn’t want to draw it and couldn’t find one. Thanks!
I don’t know why that was so hard for me to find.
I am not real fast at drawing this stuff… yet
This is a free resource at First In Architecture – CAD Blocks Archives
You can always use this as a texture in SketchUp or a Pattern in LayOut. It could be drawn in SU with just one segment a ‘seamless’ component…then arrayed as needed. In LayOut, SU components can be converted into Scaled Drawings and added to Scrapbooks.
Or p
ost a pic or screenshot of what you want to draw and everyone on this forum will help show you a fast way to accomplish it.
Hi TommyD,
If you decide to create your own symbols (for insulation), this tutorial seems quite good & explores ways to add detail with 2D section cuts as an overlay. The insulation part starts at around 9mins into the tutorial.
How about the world applies some common sense and use a graphic for insulation that isn’t so complex create and adapt ??
Personally I refuse to use such stupid graphics… I use either colour or a straight line texture…
