Hi cutting edge Mac people! Whilst I know Trimble will not officially support the new MacOS 26 Tahoe until Sketchup 26, I was wondering if anyone has any experience using it in Tahoe Beta’s? In the past couple years Sketchup has been pretty stable running in new MacOS’s.
For non Sketchup related reasons I may need to update my Mac OS to ‘26 and wanted to have an idea of what I might be letting myself into…
pinging @colin. Often he has the latest beta of macOS installed for checking. But, of course, until SU 26 is released, nobody from Trimble will promise you that any problems with SU 25 on macOS 26 will be addressed.
It’d be a pleasant surprise if the next version of SketchUp supports it, it’s usually released just after Apple do their yearly update and SU rarely offers official support for it.
I do have my own Mac on Tahoe, and I know other people are using it as well. I’m not sure at what point it will be listed as a supported system, but I haven’t seen any issues that wouldn’t also happen in Sonoma or Sequoia.
To be honest, I want to upgrade to macOS 26, but I’m a bit worried. When I upgraded to macOS 15 last time, SketchUp 2024 kept crashing frequently, which was really frustrating. Upgrading is easy, but if I can’t use SketchUp 2025 and Enscape 4.11 before SketchUp 2026 is released, I won’t be able to work.
Edited 17/9/25,I just upgraded to macOS 26, and so far SketchUp 2025 and Enscape 4.11 are running normally.
yeah. well, there is a simple principle in IT, before you upgrade your OS, make sure you get a green light from all your essential software .
right now, it looks ok for sketchup 25, but as usual, I don’t think macos26 will be marked as officially supported until SU26 (unless they release a very late SU25.1 but it’s mid sept, I doubt that)
if you choose to upgrade, look for tutorials about rolling back. not that you’ll need to, but just in case, you want to know what it implies.
take your time, it’s just an os, and mac os often gets better / more stable around .2 or .3
on a personal note, I’ll wait. a bit. a lot even. I’m not in a hurry, there is not a lot of new features this years, it’s mostly graphical, and judging by all the previews I’ve seen, It’s not my cup of tea (it gives me ptsd from windows vista). so unless I know I can basically tone down / turn off most of the liquid glass stuff, I’ll keep sonoma.
If you’re using a newer OS and encounter issues, SketchUp support won’t be able to help, as it’s outside their tested environment.
So the real question is:
Are you comfortable diving into unexpected bugs and troubleshooting them yourself — or is that something you’d rather avoid?
If SketchUp is critical to your daily workflow, taking that risk might not be the wisest move.
On the flipside, if you already have a horrible time with SketchUp, then the new MacOS will fix a load of Apple’s bugs , so maybe you’ll get lucky and it will work better
What is the reason? If SKP and Enscape work and you can get work done… and there is no mission critical reason to upgrade… don’t.
But if you do - TimeMachine backup before you upgrade (in case you have to roll back) - and please document how it goes here… everyone loves having someone else be the crash test dummy.
With any new macOS I do try to see how old a version of SketchUp will open. That’s a different test to how long they will stay working, but it’s interesting to try.
A couple of macOS versions ago I could open SketchUp 2017. Then I think the next one I could open 2018. With Tahoe I can open 2016. That isn’t to say that I would recommend working in 2016, but Tahoe seems to be doing better that earlier macOS.
One other thing, the crashing that happened in all versions of SketchUp earlier than 2023.1, if you changed material sections or resized the Colors palette, appears to be fixed in Tahoe.
edit: I tried in Sequoia 15.6.1, and the Colors palette crash is fixed there as well.
@ahmay Well, thanks for taking one for the team! Keep us posted on your experience, in particular if you see any glitches. Are you using Layout also? In the past I have found Layout more glitchy than Sketchup during OS version transitions.
