Ambient occlusion on SketchUp Pro 2025 (Windows)

Hi to everyone!
New member on the forum. I recently updated the SketchUp Pro 2024 to the 2025 version.

In the 2024 version, I used to be able to adjust and play with ambient inclusion and to produce good quality 2D pictures of my model without needing to do any rendering.

In the 2025 version it seems that the ambient inclusion option is not active. And the quality of the images has significantly decreased.

Any ideas as to why this may be?

Thanks everyone!

hello,

with the default “simple style” it is indeed not activated, you’ll have to go where pointed on my screenshot to activate it

it is then up to you to save as a new style and even save as a default template for future projects

& make sure it’s turned on here…

hi paul! thanks for the reply! I tried that, but i get this (image) instead. Like it’s faded and can’t activate it.

hey paddy! thanks for the reply! i turned it on, but i still the option is kind of “faded” and i can’t adjust it. see picture below.

go to window > preferences > graphics

and make sure the new graphics engine is selected (and the right GPU), restart sketchup so it takes effect

did you change your computer while switching from 2024 to 2025 ?

tried this and still no luck… I am still getting the same result. i’ll try and re-install the 2025 version. maybe that will do the trick? if you have any other suggestions please let me know!

Was is set to new graphic engine in the settings or were you able to change to it ? Or is it greyed out as well ?

it was already set to new. i did make sure that sketchup 2025 runs on the correct GPU too.

What is the “correct GPU”? Your profile shows your graphics card as Intel which would be an integrated GPU. Is that correct?

My laptop has an intel core i5 cpu and an external nvidia geforce rtx. so for programs like sketchup i make sure they run through the nvidia gpu.

Hmm, it really should work then… How did the re-install go ?

Time to update your forum profile then!
Also 2025 is not an operating system.
That information helps us to help you..

it pretty much went the same way. i need to produce some work in the meantime, so i re-installed the 2024 version (which stills works fine) and in the meantime i will keep looking into solving the issue on the 2025 version. i’ll keep you posted if i make any progress on that. hopefully soon

It is likely not supported with external GPU…

External Graphics Cards (eGPU) - SketchUp is untested and unsupported on systems with eGPUs attached. While it may work for some users, we will not provide support for SketchUp on a system with this configuration.

thanks for this! i’ll check this out and get back to you!

I wonder if @constantinos.palivos didn’t mean “dedicated” when he wrote “external” ?
We have some gaming laptops here that have rather good “dedicated” nvidia GPU’s & they run Su2025 & display the AO no problem.
