I reinstalled version 253. When I launched SketchUp for the first time, the Extension Manager prompted that two plugins needed updating: AI Render and Dynamic Components. After I clicked to update AI Render, SketchUp stopped responding.

yes, it can take some time.

When you install a sketchup version, the default plugins (like ai render) are set to a certain version (from the day the installer was made). therefore you always have to update them.

Now I’m hesitating whether I should upgrade to version 257.

don’t. this version only had a couple bugfixes, and obviously it caused the problem you had in the first place.

I’m still monitoring my colleague’s mac, but it seems it’s stable now. you can skip 257 and wait for the next one.

A colleague just had the problem on mac, reinstalling the previous patch worked download.sketchup.com/SketchUp-2026-1-253-80.dmg http://download.sketchup.com/SketchUp-2026-1-252-80.exe (haven’t tried the solution on PC)
