Hi gang. I was wondering if any of you wood working experts have any tips on how to attach a cone leg very securely on a dresser I am working on. I attached a screen grab for reference.
The CONE leg is 1 3/4" at top and 1" round at bottom and height is 7". The trim around the bottom is a molding that matches the solid wood top.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and or ideas.
Are you referring to attaching the real leg to the dresser? Typically there’s a threaded stud in the top of the leg and a steel plate attached to the bottom of the case. The leg can then just be screwed into the plate. These sorts of things are available off the shelf. Here’s an example.
Thanks Dave. The plate idea wont be strong enough as these dressers will solid wood. I was thinking maybe something like this (screen shot attached) and then attached to the case, maybe also add a dowel for extra support.
I don’t understand why the plate won’t be strong enough. Screws into solid wood will be stronger than into plywood or MDF.
How would you attach the legs to that frame?
If you are against the plate you could put hanger screws in the legs and add threaded inserts or T-nuts to the top of the frame into which the leg can be threaded.
I would guess that the top part of the 3 shown by Dave shall be reversed (flipped vertically) and then fixed to the frame to which the legs will be screwed. The mid part would be screwed in the leg, leaving the upper thread to be screwed in the top part.
The top part is a T-nut and should be installed in the orientation shown on the top side of the frame so it can’t be pulled out if the leg is stressed. There would be little strength if it was inverted and installed on the underside of the frame.
If the threaded insert must be installed from the bottom there are inserts with external threads that would be better.
