It might take a little while to review all 424 pages…

I was still at 3D Basecamp when mine arrived. It patiently waited for me to get home 12 hours later.

I’m sad to report that our revered SketchUp Guy commits a beginner’s error in the section titled “Face or a surface?” (sorry, since my copy is on Kindle I can’t tell what page that is in the hard copy, but it is relatively early in the book). There it says “If one or more faces are connected at the edge and that edge is smoothed … they will merge together, forming a surface”. That is wrong! They form a surface when the edge is softened. Smooth causes the shading of the two faces to blend across the edge, causing it to look, well, smooth instead of having a sharp change of shading across the edge. To make the point, I unchecked the smooth option on one edge of this cylinder, but left it soft. You can see that the entire cylinder is a surface because it selects as a single unit, but there is a sharp break in the shading at that unsmoothed edge.

I think it works with smoothing too. I need to get to the bottom of this, but the test I just did made a surface out of the top of the cylinder and the sides…
