A different file extension for the backup file

Hi Guys,
Not sure if this has been requested before, but it would be useful to change the file extension for bakup files, same as you do for Sketchup. On more than one occasion, I’ve selected a bakup by mistake and carried out work on an outdated file. Not sure of the logic of why you would keep it as the same file extension.
Anyway, small gripe, but would be great if that potential for confusion was eliminated.

Cheers

It could be helpful if the extension was different but on the bright side, the backup copies are all called “backup of filename.layout” Better than the ~ at the end of the name for backups of .skp files on Mac.

That’s not what I see on my Mac. As the OP has indicated both SU and LO store the backups as “Name~.skp” or “Name~.layout”. And I do agree that they could be better differentiated.

I based my reply to the OP on their forum profile which indicates they are using SketchUp and LayOut on Windows. I agree that the tilde on Mac is not a very obvious indicator of the backup copy of the file. Using a different file extension would help prevent users from editing the wrong file.

Alas, the use of ~ to designate a backup is a long-standing UNIX convention that is not familiar to people who haven’t used UNIX a lot. But There is no good reason why SketchUp couldn’t have used the same naming practices on Mac and Windows! Nothing about macOS prevents it.
