there is a known issue on a mac,
as you don’t say what version of Sketchup or which OS you use, it’s difficult to help…

Did you try different fonts?
I was attempting to use several different fonts. I am currently running OS 10.10.2.
as there are known issues on a mac, is there any way to fix?
If you are running SU 2014, there is no fix except to upgrade to 2015. This is a known incompatibility between Yosemite and SU versions prior to 2015.
Still a problem on SUM 2015 with Mountain Lion
