2d to 3d in Sketchup

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

My question is this: is there a way to take a person’ s picture and turn it it into real 3d? The idea is to print miniatures that look like people from Skechup.

I wonder if there is any extention that would do that.

Thanks.

If are referring to the “scale figures” in SketchUp, I doubt it. Those figures are not only 2D, they are face-me and flat colored. There is nothing from which an algorithm could try to infer depth!

No, SketchUp (or any other software) cannot turn a 2d photo of a person into a 3D model of that person. There is simply not enough information in that photo to extrapolate from.

There is software that can assemble a 3D interpolation from a series of 2D photos taken from all different angles. This is called Photogrammetry. You could use a smartphone photogrammetry app to scan a person which result in a 3D geometry file which can be imported into SketchUp and subsequently adjusted there and exported for 3D printing. You would need to have access to the subject. I have used Polycam for this, a quick search will show many other options.

There is also the idea of shape from shading, but a) as I noted, the scale figures use unshaded colors, and b) that could only get you one side, the other would remain flat unless it too was shaded. So I agree that this is in general impossible.

Yes, you can use a 2D image to create a 3D model of a person.
If you are learning to work with quads, you can do it in SketchUp, using Vertex Tools and SUbD, or Artisan. Or you can generate them automatically using a site that offers this possibility.

@mihai.s 's suggestions work from actual photos, not the scale figures. If that is what you meant, shape from shading algorithms can work at least for the visible side. The back can’t be done because there is no info there. Also, if you meant can you do it manually, then of course the answer is yes using the sorts of tools he suggests - though the image will just be acting as a reference while you draw the 3D yourself.

So I guess that goes back to my reading of the original post: did you mean the scale figures in sketchup or actual photos of people, and did you mean an extension to do the job for you without intervention, or a suite of extensions you could use to do the job manually?

You can also use the 2D Face Me photo (‘scale figures’) to generate a 3D model of that person.

What site is that? And is it AI? It seems to be fabricating information that doesn’t exist in the starting image!

Yes, there are websites that use AI to generate 3D models from text or 2D images. A Google search will yield plenty of such websites that you can try out.

keywords: text to 3d model AI, 2d image to 3d model AI, etc…

Happy New Year.
We live in an age that anything can come to life visually or audibly

I meant to create the 3d from photos with the help of some software. I would not mind taking part in it, of course.

now that could be a fun challenge.

step 1, make a 2d faceme model of yourself.

step 2 make a 3d out of it using the website you used.

step 3 compare :slight_smile:

I can’t find a site that will generate a 3D model from a photo AND export to an .skp file. It seems you have found one. Are you using Meshy? I can’t figure out how to get it to work.

The sites offer downloadable files in common formats that can be imported by any 3D graphics software, such as OBJ, FBX, GLB or USDZ, and SketchUp can import some of these.

Not only Meshy, you can try any of the ones that a simple Google search will find.

It says on the screen:

  • Create an account;
  • Drag and Drop/Upload an image;
  • Click Generated 3D model;
  • Click Download model.
