When using the interface I am able to pan and zoom and model at a reasonable pace. As soon as I select the Rotation tool (Q) my interface becomes almost unresponsive. Even the UI lags many seconds behind. The same thing will happen if I select the Protractor tool.
With models that show a lot of profiles, use shading and a lot of textures, the graphic processor must work very hard. This can lead to sluggish movements and rotations.
When working with such models, I create two scenes. One I call “Show” and the other “Work”.
After adjusting all setting for a beautiful render, I update the “Show” scene.
Then I adjust the settings to be as minimalist as possible, like monochrome, no profiles, no shadow, etc. and then I update the “Work” scene. In extreme cases I may use Wireframe mode.
Once that is done, all I have to do is click on the proper scene tab.
For example. I click on “Work” then I pan, zoom and orbit to get the view that I like. Then I click on “Show”.
Needless to write that I make sure that the check box in front of Camera Position in the Scene Window is unchecked to avoid loosing a carefully composed view.
You may even do that in an empty model file and save it as a template if you need that often.
Just create a separate Style for each scene. (I usually named the Styles the same as the scene name.)
Once all your scenes and styles are set up and the scenes have been updated to their own style, save the SKP as a template. Then begin new projects using your template.
