Why do I have to sign up to the forum?

What are you on about? The hand icon is still there and labeled for what it does.

Even so, why not use the center mouse button with Shift for Pan?

That icon is not the ‘grab’ icon that used I be the default years ago. It didn’t have the left/right arrows and the finger, instead when you clicked to move it the fingers of the hand contracted and grabbed the screen. I spent many minutes looking for the hand; ‘pan’ doesn’t communicate the action the way the ‘grab’ did. On a PTZ camera (pan-tilt-zoom), the pan means side-to-side, the tilt means up and down. Even though the OED describes ‘pan’ as " (of a camera) be swung in a horizontal or vertical plane," I would argue that most people would infer the verb to be side to side, and that would be reinforced by the red left/right arrows of the icon.

Again, why replace something that was intuitive and easily understood?

And I’m not using a mouse, I’m using the trackpad.

It’s the current Pan icon. It’s labeled as such. Things change sometimes. You’re using a free version of SketchUp. Get over the change and move on. You aren’t in a position to be insulting the developers and that violates the rules of the forum, anyway.

I apologize for the insult, it’s been a long day and I just don’t understand when things get made less clear in this day and age, when it should be the other way around.

I’ve edited my original post.

As far as using the free version, yes I am, and if as a consumer trying things out I find it not intuitive, what about that would make me want to go to the paid version?

you can login on the forum using your sketchup account.
granted, it’s the old logo. but it’s written sketchup next to it. and judging by your delayed opinion about new icons (they changed on the free version years ago…) you should remember the red SU icon.

It’s never too late to speak your mind.
In my opinion - despite it is delayed or not -; The new icons are not as good as the old ones. It’s trendy like a ripped, washed-out pair of jeans, but it’s not pretty or useful. As time goes by, my opinion only gets stronger. :innocent:

I have a deep visceral negative reaction every time I see a new tool cursor icon on the screen.

Fortunately in SketchUp I use keyboard shortcuts exclusively and extensions versus the common native tools and in Layout – for the time being – you can get back the old classic icons by copying the previous svgs into the relevant program folder.

sure, but in this case, the fact they are on SU web yet they’ve known the older icons tells me they’ve been here for what, more than 4-5 years ? the icon switch on the web version was in 20-21?

so in this case they should recognise the old red SU icon in the login page.
that was my point, not that they shouldn’t have an opinion, but that it’s delayed. in time.

man, english is hard sometimes. especially on a friday morning. I’d make more sense in french.

I haven’t been on SU since probably 2021, and gave up back then. Trying again, missed the red button because the big email/password fields were the most prominent things there, so I went with them, then got the error message. I’m slightly colorblind, so the black on red isn’t as visible, ithe black tends to blur into the background.
