Why can't I create a rabbet on the last interior face of this box lid?

I’m sketching a hamster cage to build out of plywood. The top is 3/4" ply with a cutout for a lid, which I created by drawing a rectangle and using push/pull to remove from the component. I then added a 3/8" high 1/2" rabbet around the cutout by drawing a rectangle on each interior surface and pulling it out 1/2". This worked perfectly for 3 of the 4 sides, but on the last side, drawing the rectangle even with the proper geometry (29 1/2" x 3/8") immediately creates a surface that fills in the entire cutout. Its driving me batty, I can’t figure out why. It doesn’t matter if I select the face or not. Its easy to see what I’m talking about in the attached skb file. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!

Draw an edge between the two rabbets you have, no need to draw a rectangle. It will create a face across the opening. Just pick on the face and delete it. The edge is still there. Push pull the appropriate face. If that doesn’t work. IDK. Worked for me.

You might find it easier to use a different approach to modeling this. I see parallels in the way I would cut this opening in the shop.

Thanks, I got it working finally!
