I must be looking in the wrong place, but it used to be that one could download beams and steel shapes from the 3d warehouse. all I see is models? how do I find them?

Do you mean the engineering tool box? It is installed as an extension now. Have you looked in the extension warehouse?
Sketchup has a collection called “Construction”: Construction Low Poly | 3D Warehouse. maybe it’s the one you are searching for.
In SU6 and older the component browser showed locally saved components and it was easy to find. IMO it was much better before the component browser was hooked into the warehouse with all the less useful models that makes the useful one harder to find.
