WHERE are the Layers in SKP 2020 Pro?

I just upgraded to SKP 2020 from SKP 2019 and noticed there isn’t a Layers Panel. Where is it and how do I get it back up?

Thanks

With 2020 the name of Layers has been changed to Tags.

It is explained in the Application Release Notes.

This is absolutely absurd! WHY would you want to make things more difficult? The layers need to come back because this version is absolutely useless without layer control. Who would ever in their right mind think that removing layers would be an improvement?

Okay, that make absolutely no sense. Just leave them as layers. Now my company will be using 2019 until this is fixed because SKP is useless without layers.

You are overreacting. The only thing that has changed about “layers” is their name. “Tags” have exactly the same functionality. I too don’t think the name change was necessary but it really makes no difference to me.

They behave exactly identically to layers in CAD applications like AutoCad. They behave differently to layers in Photoshop and other 2D image/graphics applications. Layers in LayOut behave in tha main like layers in graphics apps.

The 2020 version gives you control of layers (now called tags) in Layout, so it is definitely worth moving on from 2019.

This is probably one of the reasons for renaming SU layers to tags.

In 2019 I could easily add layers by pressing the + symbol…now, I have no clue how to add them. Why would they take one of the most fundamental functions and completely ruin it?

The only thing that has changed is the name. Layers are called Tags now and you can click the + as much as you want.

Like Box says, layers were actually improved, but were renamed “tags”, which you can now also control in Layout. They function exactly as before but with more possibilities.

I don’t use Layout. What I want to do is have Layers so that I can control what I turn on and off. I don’t have any way of doing that now in SKP. I can’t ADD “tags”.

The only major difference in SU2020 is the change of the name from Layers to Tags. You can add tags just like you used to add layers.

@Arkiteker do you understand the meaning of “renamed”?

I’m not sure how to be more clear. Tags in SU 2020 are exactly the same as Layers in SketchUp 2019 The only difference is the name change. You control and use them exactly as you did before. Again, for the 2020 version of SketchUp, Layers are now called Tags. All functions you had before are there with added functionality in Tags. They still control visibility.

An easy way to see this is to open a file you created in 2019 version in the new 2020 version. Click on the tags tray and you’ll see all your layers there…but now they are tags.

Mine doesn’t have that at all. :frowning: I’m going to uninstall and reinstall.

I doubt you need to uninstall and reinstall SketchUp. Just look in the Window menu for Default Tray. Make sure Tags is checked to show and that the Default tray is set to show. By default the tray should be on the right side, not on the left like mihai.s shows. It may also be that you have it unpinned which means the tray is collapsed and will only show as a tab on the side unless you hover the cursor over it.

If you do reinstall SketchUp, make sure you right click on the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator.
