What resources are available, such as books (I’m not a video type of person), for a beginner? I have SketchUp Pro for Macintosh.

I think that I am taking your SketchUp Furniture design course through FineWoodworking.
I am using two screens. One has SketchUp, the other has your video.
What I have running is SketchUp Pro for Mac 2024 version. So there is a bit of a learning curve going between an older Windows version and a newer Mac version. They don’t necessarily work the same way, or have the same functions in the same locations.
I like to look for something, find it, see what it does, and have the book confirm that what I have done is correct.

There’s not a huge difference between SketchUp 2022 (the version I recorded the video in) and SketchUp 2024. Almost everything works the same between Windows and Mac although the modifier keys are different. I made sure to mention the Mac modifier keys in the narration but you should also watch at the lower left of the model window where modifier keys are indicated based on the tool you have selected.
Toolbar arrangements will be different from user to user. Pretty much the same way that every woodworker arranges the tools in their shops differently.
Take time to poke around at the tools and see what they’ll do. You can’t hurt anything or cut off your thumb. 
By the way, if you have the Getting Start tool palette out use the Search tool (magnifying class icon to the left of Select. Also while you are getting used to the tools, keep the Instructor panel open. (Window menu).
