What has happened to sketchup?

No, I don’t think it is personal - I think it was a management decision to improve their bottom line. That said, I think it’s a bad decision - alienating your buying public is not a good idea.

I always thought the monied people of the world, think the world revolves around them. We are just part of the scenery.

SketchUp Make 2017 may have been withdrawn by Trimble from the download server, but it’s still free, still out there, and it does 95% of what SketchUp Pro does (depending perhaps on your use case). For casual or infrequent users, it’s still an excellent solution.

Yes it is for hobbyist users.

With the caveat that you download it at your own risk from those sources and be aware the download could contain unwanted stuff.

A Limited access plan or a monthly plan might be huge for woodworkers. Many hobby woodworkers are not in their shops regularly, especially during the summer months, and are put off by paying a year’s subscription for something they will only use in October.
Also, at $300, that is a price of a decent hand plane, so that’s a hard choice, Software that will expire or a shiny new hand plane.

I have also learned that woodworkers hate the web version. When I taught my “intro to SketchUp course for woodworkers,” I got a lot of pushback because I used the web version to teach the course.
Many students mentioned that they wish Sketchup had an in-between desktop version, where they could use a cut list extension and have a way to get their drawings out of SketchUp and on paper so they can take them out to the shop to build. Those core needs are lacking in the web versions.

Dave, you may be scared of the Internet but there’s really no reason to be if you take adequate precautions. SketchUp Make 2017 is as legitimate now as it was in July, when it was still available on Trimble’s servers. And it does, as I said, 95% (or more) of what SketchUp Pro does for most potential users.

If Trimble want to make it inaccessible for users, they can. They haven’t done so. Until they do I will continue to use it and recommend it to others. The minute they do make it inaccessible, I’m off to Blender.

I’m not scared of the internet.

And I agree for hobbyist like yourself, SketchUp 2017 Make is fine. Of course it isn’t supported by the 3D Warehouse and hasn’t been for some time. Other web based services will also stop working by the end of the year but other than that…

I’m a little confused about how you used the application in the past, before you bought Go. Were you using Make? Did you purchase the full version some years ago and came back to upgrade it?
