It seems every time I think I figured out how to use vray settings well I somehow f it up.
If I set up a model with a 360 sky image I can manage to get the setting’s dialed in a get some great results. I am trying to learn how to use the clouds in vray and the sky looks amazing but my model is super dark and cant come up with the right combination of setting. or, the model looking great, lighting looking good. clouds not showing up. Anyone good at this that can help?

A few things:

  • use Purge command (Window > Model Info > Statistics > Purge Unused). The model will drop from 220 MB to 130 MB.

  • Group the raw geometry, edit existing groups and delete objects far from the origin

  • Orient all faces correctly, with the white facing outwards

  • Do not assign tags to raw geometry unless you know exactly what you are doing.

  • Regarding V-Ray, you could reset to default values and set a few things to be able to render quickly and test more easily until you get the desired image.

  • You could use Light Gen (Extensions > V-Ray > Light Gen), and after choosing one of the lighting variants, activate it and set SunLight with Custom Orientation and Clouds

  • You could use a Dome Light if you wanted, instead of Clouds.
