Using AI with SketchUp

I needed to copy and paste a list of tags that were in a model, and I wasn’t sure how, and didn’t want to manually type them out.

So I asked GPT 4o to tell me how. Instead of offering an extension or a native solution, it said “try this snippet of ruby script.” I was a bit shocked. I pasted it into the console, and got an error. I was a bit sad, but I gave the error code to the AI.

To my surprise, it basically said, “oh, I see what the problem is, here try this one.”

And it flippin’ worked…

I felt like I had super powers.

How have you used AI with SketchUp?

Only a few times. To start learning and understanding ruby.
I got it to write me code to draw a nice parabola of which I could change the color and the settings.
Just to try. And it worked in one go through copy/paste in the Ruby Console.
But you need to feed AI in the right way to let it work for you. Don’t trust its outcome unless you know how to repeat feeding it with additional information to get it right.
