Untitled Layout Gone

Is there any way to recover an unsaved layout file? It crashed before I could save my work…

Probably a long shot but look in YourUserName/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2025/LayOut/working and see if there’s a file from just before the crash. If so, select the contents inside the file and zip them up. (I use 7Zip for that.) After that change the extension from .zip to .layout. Fingers crossed it’s there and will open in LO. If it does, immaediately use File>Save as … And save it in a local folder.

Wow… that was crazy, but it worked after I found the correct folder under the “working” directory. Thanks @DaveR, you’re the best. :beer_mug:

Hello DaveR,

I am in a similar situation. I tried what you suggested but it’s not working for me. I use a mac so 7-Zip wasn’t working for me. I have a PC so I tried on that but still no success. Do you have any other solutions in mind?

What version of SketchUp. Still 2021 as your profile shows?

Im using both 2024 and 2025. I was in 2024 with this project

Please update your forum profile.

So you started a LayOut file, didn’t save it, and it crashed? Did you find the recovery file at all?

My guess is that you’ll need to start over but when you do, save it almost immediately and then save frequently after that. Make sure you are saving the file to the internal drive, not to a cloud location.

Yes, I found files in the working folder per your comment. However they are just xml files.

Yea, I already started but hoping you have a solution because I did the rookie mistake and got lost in the work and neglected to save. Hate to redo hours of work but it is what it is.

The XML files by themselves aren’t enough. Are there any folders in there with the XML files. You should see something like this.

Yes I see all that

Can you select the first seven and the last file and zip them up?
