Hi, I dont know what happened but I worked all day on my layout file and it didn’t save once in the day, and I usally save a lot, and now the recuperate version dosen’t open as well but I dont have any error message it just turn and turn without nothing. The 3D file didn’t open to but I manage to recuperate it. Can I get the recuperate layout file elsewhere?
Share the LayOut file so we can see if it’s possible to recover it.
Are you still using SketchUp 2021 as your forum profile shows?
I cannot open it and the last saved on the file on my computer was on dec 5 and i’m afraid to open it and loose the recuperate file of yesterday. I’m using 2025
Upload the file to DropBox and share the link.
Please update your forum profile.
The file you shared is huge! It did open in LayOut 2026, though. I’ll take a look at it and see if I can find anything that might be a problem. I do see that the .skp reference shown as embedded which means that it’s not linked to your original working file.
Back after I’ve had a look around.
I know it’s huge. I didn’t know how to reduce it further without cutting materials since I use this file to do my renders and 3D presentations. It’s should be link to the sketchup file tough….
Ok thank you so much… I’ll wait to see if you can do something but I could update for 2026 to.
A lot of the materials are excessively large even for rendering. And there are plenty of textures that could easily be either replaced with simple colors or removed altogether. Do you really need a hi res texture for a slice of toast?
Actually the largest one is not embedded. There’s another file that is embedded. Interestingly there’s a third .skp file listed in the file but it doesn’t show in the references. That could cause a problem. I’ll see if I can clean it up a bit.
FWIW I went through the two .skp files to check for other possible issues. I noticed incorrect tag usage. This the 3D rdc Chloe file.
The one called 3D v2 has the same issue.
It also contains a lot of unused stuff.
Cleaning up the files reduced the file size dramatically which has a carry-on benefit in LO.
I reduced the textures some. Most of them are used on very small objects in the model. The total reduction in LO file size is about 40%.
Another thing to keep in mind is if the SketchUp file size is too large, copying and pasting viewports will leave you with images of the model and not actual viewports. There’s a thread on this topic here somewhere. I’ll see if I can find the thread.
Keeping your SketchUp files under control will help prevent issues. Also make sure you are manually saving the file to an internal drive on your computer.
Edit to add: Here’s a link to the thread.
Thank you so much….. I really need to learn how to keep my sketchup file size down and all that tag usage etc…. It’s the part where I’m bad…..
You’re welcome. I hope the file behaves better for you.
It’s actullay my dec 5 version not the recuperate file of yesterday that I could not open…. I’m still going to have to redo everything I did yesterday ![]()
I thought you had shared the recovery file. It should be in User/AppData/Local/SketchUp/SketchUp 2025/LayOut/Working
User/AppData is a normally hidden directory. You can make AppData visible in the Options.
The path is:
YouUsernameAppData\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\LayOut\working\
Oh I have it.
That file is even bigger. Hang on and I’ll see what I can see.
Thank
Where have you been saving the SketchUp and LayOut files while working on this project? One of the SketchUp reference and two of the image reference paths were blank which is weird.
The same sort of issues with incorrect tag usage and excessively large materials exist. I fixed the first and reduced the second. Then I fixed the missing references in the LayOut file. Hopefully this one will play better.
There is some pretty crazy detail in those models that will not be helping things
Are the metal clips on the USB sockets for the power outlets considered an essential part of your interior design to the client?
I was about to make a post referring to the excessive detail in some of the objects in your model and those USB ports that @Elmtec-Adam shows were the first thing on my list. There’s a lot of that kind of stuff like the wires in the toaster, racks in the oven, and other small details that probably don’t add anything to your design.
