Transparency option

“I am a new user of the program. I have a problem with the transparency option — when I try to reduce the transparency, the surface becomes completely transparent.”

What exactly are you doing? Share your SketchUp model.

What graphics card? “sadsad” is a nonsense answer and the correct answer may be important in this case.

“I’m just learning right now, and I’m having trouble with the transparency option — I can’t seem to get it to work properly.”

“For example, when I try to reduce the transparency of a glass material, it becomes completely transparent even if I set it to as low as 1%.”

“Is this a simple issue, or am I missing something?”

I’m going to guess you’re missing something and it may be your “sadsad” graphics card.

The door on the left here has no face for glass at all.

And editing the opacity for the material on the “glass” on the right works as expected for me.

Do you see something different than I show here when you do exactly the same thing?

Why do you have different materials on the door and the small window?

You should spend some time going through the tutorials at learn.sketchup.com.

I don’t know about the simplicity, but it is a known issue with some AMD graphics cards. You should try updating your graphics card driver.

“There’s a big difference — when I reduce the transparency, even just a little, the surface becomes completely transparent.”

So again, what graphics card? Did you do as @Anssi suggested and update the graphics drivers?

What graphics engine do you have selected in Window>Preferences>Graphics?

“Yes, I will update the graphics card and see if anything changes.”

“I’m using an integrated graphics card (built into the CPU).”

Switch to the Classic graphics engine, then.

“Thank you all, the issue has been resolved.”

“Do you recommend a specific course for me to study?
I’m at the end of my first year studying architecture and have just started learning architecture software.
In your opinion, should I start with SketchUp or Revit?”

Good. Now please correct your forum profile.

SketchUp is a good way to go. Start with the tutorials at the link I gave you.

“Alright, thank you for your help.”

Unless I am wrong, with SketchUp, you control the opacity. Reducing opacity is indeed augmenting the transparency.

You can model a lot faster and easier with sketchup than with Revit, you can even make organic designs pretty easily if you know the right tools, on Revit that’s something almost impossible. In university time is the most valuable resource, creating a model and a presentation with sketchup and layout will take you a lot less time than doing it with Revit, plus you’ll need other softwares like illustrator for creating the panels.
You can learn Revit or Archicad in the future if you want, those are industry standard softwares, but there’s nothing that those softwares can do that sketchup isn’t able to do, BIM is a methodology of modeling not a feature of a software like many people believe.

it’s your first year of architecture, so… both ? and / or archicad ?
if you have the opportunity to access classes on these softwares, do it. learning them is easier in a forgiving environment that is all about… learning.

you don’t need to become an expert on all of them, just try them out, see what they can or can’t do. because sooner or later, in your professional life, you’ll be confronted to the other softwares (you might even find a job in a company that uses one you haven’t learned).

you’re a student, use this time to gather as much knowledge as you can.
