Tracing or Outlining A Wrench?

Hello! I’m trying to create a small organizer tray that I will be 3D printing. I have a small wrench that will go in this tray. Is there a way to trace a black/white image of the wrench so that it creates a line that I can push/pull? I looked for some topics but I think I only found older articles (?)
I can use my cnc software to trace an image to create the needed svg files, but of course, I can’t import the svg into Sketchup. Any help is appreciated!

You can import the image into SketchUp Go and use the various drawing tools to trace what you need to create a face.

Will the cnc software export a .dxf file? You could import that. There are some online tools that can do raster to vector. Search for that and maybe give one of them a try.

too bad you aren’t using the desktop version. There’s at least one extension out there that could trace the image in SketchUp and leave you with a face to extrude with Push/Pull.

I did try that but of course my lines come out all janky. I thought there used to be a tool like a pen or something that I could refine with nodes/bezier. I’ve looked up other YouTube videos for other tasks and I always see people using this, and I thought I used to have it too.

There is a freehand tool but like all other drawing tools in Sketchup, it approximates curves with short straight edge segments.

There are a variety of Bezier curve-drawing tools available as extensions but of course that requires the desktop version to be able to use them.

and I’m guessing the desktop version is not the web version…and is probably another thing I’d need to pay for, even though I’m paying for the iPad version, which also doesn’t have the proper tools I need.

Yes. The desktop version is not Sketchup for Web. The desktop version includes more tools, applications, and capabilities that Sketchup Go. It’s like anything else. The low end version won’t have all the features of the higher end version. It’s the same with automobiles, and computers, and 3D printers, and shop tools …

FWIW, I found a silhouette of a wrench and used an extension called Image Trimmer to create the face which was then extruded with Push/Pull to make a solid component.

It took me longer to find a suitable wrench silhouette than it did to make the 3D object.

but i probably can’t get extensions for the web version or the ipad version?

Right. I mentioned that earlier in this thread and in another of your threads. You have to have a desktop version and subscription of SketchUp (currently SketchUp 2024 Pro or Studio) in order to have the option to use extensions.
