Timing of eliminating SU2019 support and release of SU2025

If you bring the cheese, I’ve got the whine…

It is a drag that my team’s SU2019 will no longer have access to the SU Warehouse and Extension library BEFORE the release of the SU2025!

It is a pain in the neck to update all of the settings and extensions in SU and LO and it sucks that I’ll now have to do it twice if I want to get up to date after the 2025 release.

It would have been helpful to extend the 2019 support/access until after the 2025 release.
Although…when will the new release even happen. The release date has been later and more inconsistent in recent years.

Before you say “You’ve had 5 years to update from 2019”…well, there hasn’t been any meaningful updates for my workflow in a long time…otherwise known as…Layout still sucks and needs fixing.

A simple tool to make it easier to update and not lose all of your settings and extensions would be helpful. Maybe one exists that I am unaware of?

…back to your regularly scheduled programing…

You won’t lose access - you can still go to the website and download what you need…

LayOut is much faster now than it was in 2019…

To be honest; I thought 2019 went a year ago when the already existing support policy started to be enforced.

But also; why would you need to upgrade to a support version then immediately update to 2025?
Each version of SketchUp has guaranteed support for 3 years after its release.

If you upgrade to 2024 right now, that will continue to function as is now until the 31st of January 2027.

It’s just a pain and large task to upgrade twice if a short period of time if by some miracle they is features in 2025 that I actually will use.

Faster maybe, but still many missing, broken and out of date features for this day and age. I don’t want to sidetrack this topic, but you can find plenty of mine and others issues with LO on other forum posts.

Doing a single (simple) thing twice in 2 years?

I would have thought that this would be a small price to pay for maintaining the security of your machines and your data.

oh yeah. a few years ago. supported versions are 22 - 23 - 24

but it’s direct in-app support. the websites are still accessible and free…

well you’ve waited 5 years, what’s a couple more weeks ? SU19 is already unsupported so nothing will change before 25 is released.

trust me on this, SU24 is better than SU19, and SU25 will be better than 24, but really, the game changer will be 26, unless it’s 27…
If you have 100 friction points right now, and SU24 or 25 lowers it to 90 friction points, isn’t it worth it ?

I’ve been a SU user since 2003, using SU and LO exclusively since 2012 for my professional architecture work. Layout has sucked since the day it came out and the incremental changes over the years have been trivial at best and certainly not keeping up with the times or abilities of today’s technology.

For a busy professional with more than one user I don’t consider it simple. With a lot of extensions and user interface and file location settings it is a task, particularly when there are LO compatibility issues between PC and Mac and my team uses both.

The last time I did this was an attempt to upgrade to SU2020 in the year 2020, but there were issues with performance consistency amongst different state of the art computers and no one at SU or on these forums could help me solve them so I had to settle with only upgrading to SU2019. Now I fear that time sucking process every time I consider upgrading and whether its worth it.

I am also curious if anyone knows of a plugin or workaround for this. I also find re-upping all plugins and settings with a new version to be significantly onerous…

I don’t disagree, it can be a fair amount of time ( a few hours, which isn’t trivial for me) to set up the new release each year. It’s a good opportunity to clean house and make adjustments to your setup but I understand it can be hard to find a break to effect the change. There are some less approved hacks like simply copying over the previous years extensions folder and crossing your fingers that actually can save time at the cost of occasional headaches , however I would not recommend that tactic in a jump from 19 to 24 or 25, there have been many changes in that time. You can batch download from Sketchucation in previously saved collections and the Extensions Warehouse is improving, and SketchUp now transfers many custom settings between versions. There are other topics on how to streamline this process but it does still take effort to transfer updated versions of your extensions.

I don’t really agree about the changes in SU from 2019 to 2024, I understand how on the surface you might have the opinion that the Icon changes, the addition of the flip tool, version less file format and some other “bells and whistles” like diffusion feels like a not significant change. However I feel there have been very noticeable improvements under the hood in terms of speed and high poly capacity, SketchUp and Layout 24 is significantly faster and more powerful, and newer Layout controls of the viewport are very welcome.
