With the macOS 15.3.2 update, SU 25 thumbnail previews are no longer working in Finder.
Any ideas???
I started talking to the developers about this, but it was getting late on Friday. I will pick up the conversation with them tomorrow.
Same issue here (no thumbnails since installing SketchUp 2025) on Mac, but with macOS 14.7.4. So I think that this only has to do with SketchUp 2025, not with macOS version(?)
Same with 13.7.4
me too facing the same issues.
any solution, please help.
I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the lack of thumbnails. If you search the web you will find a lot of forum posts about thumbnails no longer working. I don’t mean only for SketchUp, for many different Mac applications. In some cases the problem claimed to be solved, but I couldn’t find any post that said what had been done to solve the problem.
I had been testing on my Macs with SketchUp, and for me it wasn’t a SketchUp 2025 issue. All versions of SketchUp were not showing a thumbnail. Then, suddenly, my work Mac (which is on 15.3.2) showed all of the thumbnails ok. My own M3 MacBook Pro still wasn’t showing thumbnails. It was on 15.4 at the time. I usually have beta releases on my own Macs.
I had a new idea about the problem, that I was going to try out on my M3. I went to do that just now, and watched as all of the thumbnails appeared. I had updated to 15.5 a couple of days ago.
So, I can’t test on my M3 anymore! Don’t worry, I have an M1 iMac (I have a lot of Macs…). That was failing to show any thumbnails. It was on 15.3 still, so to make it be a fair test I updated it to 15.5.
You may be ahead of me by now…
After the update the iMac had good thumbnails. That did mean I wasn’t able to try my new idea. But, did I mention I have an M4 Mini?
The M4 Mini was still on 15.3, and had blank thumbnails. The new test I wanted to try was to duplicate SketchUp, and run the copy. My idea was that macOS may have quarantined existing applications in some way, not letting their thumbnail drawing code work, and that tricking it into running a new SketchUp might give it a chance to reconsider.
It didn’t work, still had blank thumbnails. By the way, in my earlier tests I had already tried out all of the QuickLook resetting suggestions I had found online, and those hadn’t helped.
Meanwhile, back at the M4 Mini, I let it update to 15.5. The thumbnails then appeared ok.
I don’t know if Apple have done fixes at their end to do with thumbnails, but it does at least look like a system update is enough to make the thumbnails appear. Whether that needs to be an update to 15.5, or only a reinstall of 15.3, I’m not sure. That my work Mac started showing thumbnails after updating to 15.3.2 sounds encouraging.
also broken on my only mac (for now) running 14.7.4
I see there is a 14.7.5 queued, I’ll install it tonight and see if it fixes it. It smells like a security update that was pushed on several versions.
15.4 will wait for the mini M4 next week.
I had the 14.7.5 queued also,I just installed it and still do not see thumbs
yep.
I came to report the same, it fixed stuff but not that one
Here is the Apple support topic about this, with its 72 posts. None of them are SketchUp related:
I added a post to say that 15.3.2 and 15.5 both seem to fix the issue. Will be interesting to see if anyone else replies with the same result.
I am still on Sonoma 14.7.4 because I am not sure is SketchUp 2024 (and now also SketchUp 2025) will work without issues/crashes with Sequoia (15.4). Is it safe to upgrade my MBP M3 Max to 15.4 in terms of SketchUp 2024 and 2025 continuing to work properly?
update: just upgraded to Sonoma 14.7.5. That didn’t fix the issue.
After my earlier post my work Mac stopped showing thumbnails again, and an update to 15.4 didn’t bring the thumbnails back. My other three Macs are still showing thumbnails ok. At least I’m back in a position where I can try more ideas…
But apart from this is it safe to upgrade to Sequoia regarding SketchUp 2024 and 2025? (for general operation) Or is it better to wait? (by the way you have a lot of Macs )
2025 yes, 2024 may have some small issues. for some people it was fine even with the betas, for some other it wasn’t.
There are Sonoma and later issues that can lead to crashes with SketchUp 2022 and earlier, mainly to do with using the Colors palette. Other than that, I’m able to keep going in SketchUp 2018 and later.
That 2025 is supported for Sequoia means that if a problem shows up that only happens in Sequoia, we would fix it on our side, if it’s something that doesn’t require Apple to do the fixing. We’re not going to go back to 2024 and earlier, and release an update to fix such an issue. That doesn’t mean earlier versions cannot work.
Short version is that if Sonoma is going well for you, Sequoia is likely to be ok.
Thanks both for your reactions! Then I am going to upgrade to Sequoia soon!
sonoma 14.5.7 nothing
sequoia 15.3 I had the thumbnails. then I updated to 15.4 and gone.
I just upgraded to 15.4 and my thumbnails are back again
Strange that your thumbnails just disappeared after upgrading to 15.4?
What I noticed here using SketchUp 25 on an M3 Pro and M1 Air, both on Sequoia 15.4, the thumbnails are not loading, but if I install the previous version, either 24 or 23 of SketchUp, keeping 25 installed, they appear normally again.
But when I uninstall and delete the folders of the old versions, they stop appearing, so I thought it was something related to the SU25 and not Apple.
I’ve got 17, 24 and 25 installed, no preview.
and like I said, I had previews with 15.3 and an hour later, after updating, no previews anymore.
I didn’t even launch SU with 15.3…
