I don’t know the percentage of corporate vs. private software buyers but corporates love subscription as the costs are directly deductible whereas permanent licenses are viewed as investments. That doesn’t mean that I love subscription or other forms of rent seeking.

You are being plainly ridiculous. Rhino costs $995+VAT. Upgrades $595+VAT. Equivalent to about four years of SketchUp subscription, and if you imagine that after four years there is no need to upgrade… grow up.

Mind you, they represented about 22 M Autodesk revenue, which could represent 80 K SketchUp users(!)

One of the concerns was the change to the ‘named user’ license system, and the mere fact that even if you just used Revit for inspecting a file, you had to pay the full monty (or Lt version of about 4x the price of a SketchUp license)

The new 360 collaboration might be the answer to this specific issue, still 3x more expensive then Trimble Connect, which btw is included in a SketchUp subscription and has the advantage of being around a bit longer and evolving rapidly.
With it’s viewers and data management tools making it possible to use it without having a modeller, per se.

I think comparing high end 3D programs vs Sketchup is a unbalanced comparison, I believe unless it has changed, one needs a super healthy Graphics Card, multiple cores, and tons of memory to get the maximum speed out of any of these? About a 8-10 grand machine. You do not need that with Sketchup.

In fact, not quite like that. All 3D modelling applications are single-threaded. Multiple cores are used for non-real-time rendering but they cannot be used to speed up the modelling tools or the UI. And despite that, all modellers are CPU-intensive so what is needed is a CPU with good single-thread performance. And a good graphics card, and enough memory.
