I’m going thru the video series in sketchup school on importing and working with CAD files.
I’m seeing the pencil is not shown as assigned to untagged, there is no pencil icon. Secondly following along the video series of creating a tag and using it to assign to all untagged, the tool is inoperable. I’ve had this same issue when trying to use in general.
Can’t find any topic that helps me resolve this/understand what’s going on.

you need to select a group or component before you can tag it, I was having the same problem. about the pencil I don’t know
That’s not correct. Choose the Tag tool and highlight a tag in the Tags panel. Then click on components in the model space.
Here I’ve turned off the selected tag so the components disappear as Itag them.
The red circle with the slash through it shows if you try to give locked objects a tag with the tool. Unlocking the objects will solve that problem.
Thank you, it seemed that was how I solved the problem. I can tag using entity info.
But how are they locked in the first place?
It would take right clicking on them and choosing Lock from the Context menu. If you didn’t lock the object intentionally maybe you meant to hit Hide and missed.

What if no objects are locked? i am seeing this issue on 2025 and can’t seem to figure it out.
EDIT: In SU 2025, I have found that if the Tray is set to Autohide, the tag tool will not work as intended, as the tool is enabled, the tray autohides (if set to do this) and the tag tool displays with the "circle-back slash"symbol, regardless of the lock status on objects.
The tray must be pinned;that is the correct behavior.
The tag needs to be created prior to using the tool, it must also be selected for the tool to work.
Perhaps, but shouldn’t it also work if I highlight the tag in question prior?

No because the tag is no longer highlighted when the tray is hidden.

Should it follow that the tag tool icon in the tag tray should change to “inactive” state?, iIn my install the tag button remains active.
Perhaps the Tag tool should show as deactivated but then what tool should become active.
I’m not making any judgement on how it should work, only stating how it does work. Personally I prefer to keep the tray visible at all times. I find the model shift on screen when the tray visibility changes distracting and annoying.
