Solved Cutting Holes and Windows in Walls or Square Surfaces in Sketchup Free Web

I am a Newbie using Sketchup.

It took me a day to figure this out when cutting Holes or windows into a square shape.
I had consulted a few videos which shows this but none mention that you need to cut your
hole or window into your square BEFORE grouping it and you MUST add thickness to your
square.

I struggled with this all day and couldn’t cut my windows or holes out of my surface.
Once I chose not to initially NOT to group my square surface add a thickness to it and apply the push/pull tool to my hole or window I was then able to cut out my surface.

Another issue I found was my thickness was 15/32 for plywood. Sketchup didn’t seem to like that
either. Once I rounded my thickness dimension to 1/2" that also seemed to solve the problem.

I would be curious to know what others think about this issue or if they are even having this issue in Sketchup Free web version.

Hope this helps.

What didn’t SketchUp like about your 15/32 in. plywood thickness? There no reason you need to round the thickness to 1/2 in in SketchUp. You might not see the thickness as 15/32 in. if you have Display Precision set to coarsely but you can increase Display Precision in Model Info.

As soon as I realized not to group my surface, I then tried the 15/32 thickness dimension and noticed I had the same problem of Sketchup not wanting to cut my hole.
I notice that Sketchup rounded my 15/32 to 1/2". When I went back and set my dimension to 1/2 it seemed to work.

Thanks just went into Model Info. and chose Archetectural, 1/16". I didn’t seen any COURSE setting though. Did I miss it?
Thanks for your response to my post.

Note that I wrote “COARSE” 1/16-in. Display Precision is coarse if you want to see 32nds of an inch. Set Display Precision to 1/32 in. or 1/64 in.

This isn’t true. You can group something, and should, and then double click that group at any time to “enter” it for editing. At that point you can draw right on it and push pull or whatever, and then “exit” the editing of the group.

You can’t push pull a hole into something that has no depth. That’s just logic. If you want to cut a hole in a flat plane, then you just delete the face in question. You push the hole through something that has been extruded (has thickness). Grouping is not a requirement.

Sketchup can handle any precision you throw at it. As Dave says, the display precision is only as fine (opposite of course) as you tell it to be.

Thanks so much. I greatly appreciate your reply and suggestion. I am a Newbie, so might have been missing something when trying to cut holes.

Thanks again also for the info on Precision 1/16, 1/32 etc. I will try these things out.

Thank again for your time and interest. I do appreciate being able to learn from others.
