Slow Rendering and Frequent Crashes

I’m encountering significant performance issues with SketchUp Pro when working with large models, experiencing slow rendering and frequent crashes, and I’m seeking assistance to resolve it.

Background: I use SketchUp Pro for detailed architectural designs and large-scale modeling projects. These models often include complex geometry and numerous components. While SketchUp Pro is a powerful tool, I’ve been facing persistent performance problems that are severely impacting my workflow.

Issue: The main problem arises when I work on large models in SketchUp Pro. Actions such as orbiting, panning, and zooming become extremely slow, taking several seconds to respond. Additionally, the application crashes frequently, especially during rendering or when making modifications to the model. These issues are causing significant delays and making it difficult to complete my projects on time.

Troubleshooting: Here are the steps I’ve taken to troubleshoot the issue so far:

  1. Ensured that my computer meets and exceeds the recommended hardware specifications for SketchUp Pro, including a high-performance GPU, ample RAM, and a fast CPU.
  2. Updated SketchUp Pro to the latest version to ensure I have the most recent bug fixes and performance improvements.
  3. Optimized my models by reducing the number of polygons, purging unused components, and simplifying complex geometry.
  4. Adjusted SketchUp’s settings, such as disabling shadows and reducing the level of detail, to improve performance.
  5. Monitored system resource usage during SketchUp sessions to identify any potential bottlenecks or resource constraints.

Observations: Despite these efforts, the performance issues with large models persist, causing slow rendering times and frequent crashes. This problem is critical as it affects my ability to work efficiently and meet project deadlines.

Request for Assistance: If anyone has experience with optimizing SketchUp Pro for handling large models or has encountered similar performance issues, I would greatly appreciate your insights and assistance. Specifically, I’m looking for advanced strategies or best practices to enhance SketchUp Pro’s performance and minimize slowdowns and crashes when working with complex models.

Thank you for your help and support!

For the most part optimizing the model is the most effective method of improving performance. There’s likely more you can do than what you have in that regard. You could update the Nvidia graphics drivers and make sure SketchUp is using that GPU and not the integrated one. Which Nvidia card do you have? Which graphics engine are you using? You can try using the other one and see if you get any change.

BTW, there is no “Free Plan” of SketchUp 2024 Pro as your forum profile shows you are using.

describe large scale.

how many million lines / faces, how big in term of mb ?

some people consider 1M polygon as big. for some other it’s 100M.
it’s a small difference though.

(also yeah, free 24? )

Thank you for your prompt response and suggestions.

Regarding the optimization of the model, I’ve already made significant efforts to reduce polygon counts, purge unused components, and simplify complex geometry. However, I’m open to any additional specific tips or techniques you might recommend for further optimization.

As for my Nvidia graphics drivers, I have ensured they are updated to the latest version. I am currently using an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU. I’ve also checked that SketchUp Pro is utilizing this GPU instead of the integrated one.

In terms of the graphics engine, I’m currently using OpenGL. I’ll try switching to DirectX as you suggested and observe any changes in performance.

Additionally, if there are any other advanced settings or tweaks within SketchUp or my system configuration that you recommend for handling large models more efficiently, I’d be eager to learn about them. :grinning: :grinning:

Thank you again for your assistance. I look forward to your further guidance.
