SketchUp Tips for Beginners

I’m new to SketchUp and trying to improve my modeling skills. What are some useful tips or shortcuts that beginners should learn first?

Learn to use groups and components. Generally draw on the “Untagged” Tag (Layer).

Use the eLearning site

Watch some of the Square One videos from the SketchUp YouTube channel.

Save. often. in different files. just save.

Don’t be like Aaron, Save. :upside_down_face:

Yeah, save often. That’s been a thing back when I started learning CAD in (gasp) 1989.

When I first started learning SketchUp, I used this video to practice modeling. The first time I slowed the video down and it took me about an hour to finish. The second time it took around 40 minutes, and by the third try I was able to follow along at the same speed as the creator.

That’s a really helpful way to learn SketchUp. Repeating the same model several times seems like a great way to build confidence and get faster with the tools. I’m definitely going to try this approach myself.

Post a screenshot when you’re done. :+1:
