SketchUp section not aligned with axis after Align View

Hi, I’m having an issue with sections in SketchUp. The model itself is aligned with the axes, in Top view the walls are parallel to the red and green axes.

However, when I create a section plane and use Align View, the view becomes slightly tilted and the red or green axis appears in the section where it shouldn’t be. It looks like the axes are not aligned with the section anymore.

Even if I create a new section plane, the same thing happens.

I’m using Parallel Projection and also tried Camera - Standard Views, but the problem still remains.

Also, this is quite a heavy file with many scenes already created, so I would prefer not to recreate all the section planes if possible. I’m hoping there is a way to fix this without rebuilding all the sections.

Has anyone experienced this or knows what could cause this?

Please post your model - otherwise we are guessing.

You can drag the model to a reply, or if it is too large use a file sharing service.

Merged Scans.skp (4.6 MB)

When I use the built in views it works fine:

The first time I tried I got the same issue you show, but now I cannot reproduce the error when I try again. When I align view or when I use the standard views.

Be sure to use the arrow keys to lock the axis when placing the section cut.

You should also turn of length snapping in Model Info > Units - it is known to cause errors when modeling.

Thank you! Also I’ve this file with many scenes and section planes set up, so I would prefer not to recreate all the sections. If I redo the sections, everything in LayOut will shift.

Is there a way to fix the existing sections that have this issue?

I quit SKP, restarted, tried again. I created the Section Plane by touching a face on the outside of the building. When I use align view I get this:

If I quit, re-start and try again - but this time I did not touch a face, locked the axis with the arrow keys, then touched part of a line - Align View works:

Very strange. I feel like something is off with the section tool touching a face, but I can’t determine why.

Maybe @Colin could have someone from the Dev Team look at the file.

Out of curiosity, the file name says “Merged scans.” Was this modeled from 3D scanning in some way? Could there be something about that that is off kilter in some way?

Yes, this model originally came from a scan done in Canvas. The company processes the scan and then sends it as a SketchUp file.

However, I’ve been working with these types of files for a long time and haven’t had this issue before, so I’m not sure if the scan itself would cause the sections to behave like this.

Hi, I know this is not strictly a LayOut issue, but it affects dimensioning in LayOut, so I’m posting it here.

Can you share the file?

I can’t see any of the scenes or sections you’ve created..

Yes, I sent the initial file. The file with all the scenes is quite large.

I added a section plane, and everything appears to be square. The red axis is not visible.

Is your plane somehow slightly off square?

Even if you use the “Left” view instead of Align View to the section plane, is it still off?

Please don’t double post.

@Missa_g can you summon someone with superpowers to merge this thread into the other one on this same topic?

I copied some of the faces and clicked “Align View” on them. A few of them are lined up square with the axes, and a few show the same issue as described.

I looked into this yesterday in the other thread… which will now confuse the responses should a solution be found… if you set the units to decimal you will find them all to be zeroed out…

But it still gives you weird alignment:
