@colin , @DaveR , You guys seem to be the experts at this. I was working from home yesterday using Sketchup free, I downloaded my file onto my home desktop and then loaded it onto the office NAS. When I got to the office the file displays the error: Unexpected File Format. I tried redownloading it from the web client, cleared cache, directly onto my Pc and still getting the same error. Using Sketchup 2016 in the office. I have done this before without issue when I have worked from home before so I am unsure what I am doing wrong. It would be simple to redo my work, I just want to see if its something I can fix so if I run into this issue again I can solve it.
There’s a lot of missing data in that file. Probably lost when you saved it to the network drive. If you were using SketchUp Free the file should still be saved in Trimble Connect so you should be able to get a viable copy of it.
SketchUp Free won’t save back to older versions of SketchUp, though. And you shouldn’t be using SketchUp Free for commercial work.
I tried redownloading it at the office from Trimble Connect and get the same error. I wonder if it is our network then.
And I 100% agree with not using it for commercial work, but I am currently limited by my work’s limited WFH support. Might be time to upgrade just for myself. Thanks for your quick reply, I appreciate it.
Probably a good idea. Your employer ought to pay for it if you’re using it to do work for them. They ought to update, too. Since Windows is not supporting the old IE that SU2016 uses there are no security updates which makes that old version kind of a liability.
Could you explain that a bit more? I didn’t realize that 2016 was reliant on IE. I know we need to update a bunch of our tech but if I go to the powers that be with a security vulnerability that might get some changes moving.
Older versions of SketchUp on Windows used Internet Explorer for web-based services like access to the 3D Warehouse, Extension Warehouse, and Add Location. Windows stopped supporting Internet Explorer back in June of 2022. Part of that end of support means no more security updates.
FWIW, the warehouses and add location features haven’t supported SketchUp 2016 since 2019 either.
That makes sense. We don’t use any of the warehouse services but that could be why. Thank you again. I’m off down the rabbit-hole of our aging systems to figure out where we are vulnerable. wish me luck
Many extensions have migrated their dialog interfaces to using the newer Chromium-based UI::HtmlDialog API class. Your company cannot use these newer extensions unless y’all upgrade to 2017 and newer.
Also, be aware that the SKP file format changed with the 2021 release and is now a so-called “versionless” format. Ie, a file saved with 2024 can be opened with 2021 without the backsave to a certain version rigmarole of the past.
Trimble is no longer supporting the old pre-2021 various version format in any of the applications, online apps or online resource services. This may also be an issue for you as the web edition will be saving in the new format which SU2016 cannot read.
