Hello, we are currently homeschooling our daughter who is 16. She is enrolled in a public school district in BC Canada, so she does have a School ID or number. Is SketchUp available for her as a child who is enrolled in online learning through the school district. If so what is the process to gain access to the program. Many thanks, Don.
Hi Don,
first, this is a public forum, so most help you’ll get is from non-employees. don’t hold it against me if I’m not completely right
there are 2 special plans for schools, SketchUp for Schools which requires a google suite or microsoft account for education.
As it is essentially the free web version, I believe it’s free. You just need the required google / microsoft edu account.
(there is a dedicated section for this, SketchUp for Schools )
Technically, if I were you, I wouldn’t necessarily bother with sketchup for school. Sketchup web is free, and while SU4school might be a super tool for managing classes or districts, you’re only managing one teenager.
the other product is Sketchup for Higher Education. I’d say it’s for students, but it’s also for educators and if you’re homeschooling, then you might be considered one. and at 16, your daughter is closer to higher studies than k-12.
that one comes with (almost) the full package : it’s sketchup studio minus vray. so you get the full web version, plus ipad version, plus desktop version (the best, but I’m biased).
it’s not free, but it comes at a reduced price (about 1/6th of sketchup pro).
for that one, you need to contact Creation Engine, they manage education licences for canada.
personally, I think you could start with the free web version immediately. it’s a bit simplified, but it teaches you all the basic tools and how to think in 3d.
That leaves you some time to see if she has access to the official sketchup for schools program, or decide if she needs to go further with the pro version, and see if you can get a licence for it.
and with sketchup comes (for free) sketchup campus, free ressources to learn, as well as the official channel.
SketchUp for Schools’ capabilities are closer to the paid web version than the free version, but you can certainly start with free. If you can afford $120 US, you might consider the base subscription that also includes the iPad version if by chance you have one of those.
That’s the first question to ask of your school district. If so, then you have to ask them to sign up for SUfS.
