SketchUp for Exhibition users

First you must understand SketchUp’s system of dynamic guidance and object snaps, Inferencing.
Then practice moving geometry and groups to become proficient.

Properly constructed models contain no excess geometry.
Properly constructed models of mating parts will have corresponding geometry that’s easy to align.

The DWG files you shared contain an abundance of unnecessary geometry.
Do the diagonal braces appear like this in real life, or was this just a quick way to model?

I had a feeling it would be because of this issue… the model was drawn quickly, it doesn’t look like that in real life.

We have too many products to re-draw so maybe a program such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks would be more suited to us…

How would either help in your situation?
Modeling in SU is much faster, it’s quicker to learn and far less expensive to purchase and maintain.

We already have the CAD blocks, which means you we don’t have to redraw every single component and technical drawings can be placed onto templates with a click of a button. I’m not sure if this can be done in SU, if it can then I need someone to run through its capabilities with me!!

Hi Leon,

SketchUp is the right software for your company.
How many products/CAD blocks have you got?

Just recently we did a library of SU’s components for a scaffolding company.
Maybe we could help you with the first exhibition project in SU.

Hi everyone, we have now decided to purchase the Pro version… however I was wondering if there’s a way to generate a technical drawing of the front, plane and side views with dimensions. Any help would be grateful!

This is best done by creating scenes oriented in the three traditional directions (and parallel projection) and then exporting the scenes to Layout (which is included in Pro, so you will have it). Layout is designed to handle documentation. If you want to cover just portions of the exhibition, use layers to control visibility of Groups and/or ComponentInstances and create more scenes with just the relevant layers visible.

That sounds good… is it possible to create a template within layout with the company logo and drawing details, like most technical drawings.

Of course it is. You should spend a little time trying LayOut.

I’m out of the office this week so haven’t had chance, but i will when im back, thanks for you help

For printed layouts and specifications, then Layout is the way to go. However if you want to just print “screen dumps” with your logo and/or details, then have a look at the “watermarks” bit of the style rollup.
