Sketchup failed to open document error

true thats why im still waiting

yes i have already downloaded the file

thank you

do i need the skb file to open it?
sorry for being a newbie

No. Only the .skp file. SketchUp will automatically create the .skb as you are working on the file. I only asked for your .skb file because your .skp file was corrupted.

Make sure as you are working on the file it is saved on your internal drive, not on an external drive.

sure thanks a million

Hi, I am having the same issue. I was working on the file, and closed it for some time however, it won’t open now, it shows “failed to open the document”. Please help.

The free Web version of SketchUp has a file size limit of 100 MB. It might be that your file exceeded that limit while you last worked with it.

I have the same problem.

Ive worked on it and made some changes, i saved it and closed it.
Now i want to work in it and i cant open it. Please Help!

Thank you

Forum members can only try to help if you post your model (or share it through a cloud and post the link here). I recommend sharing both the SKP and SKB files.

I’ve managed to recover files for many users but never once have I been able to do it when the user didn’t share the file. If you want someone to help you then you must share the file.

And do not double post. One is enough. More than one just creates confusion.

Got it fixed just a couple of minutes ago.

After a long search through the lovely internet i’ve managed to solve the problem on my own.

Excuses for the double posting, not aware this was forbidden in this forum (since i’ve been called out twice).

I didn’t post my file at first, i waited till i got someone to reply on it. So my file wouldn’t be all over the internet waiting …

Thankyou for replying, hopefully it won’t happen again. Fingers crossed.

Could you say what it was that you did to fix the file? Your solution might help other people with the same problem.

Hi

Yes ofc!
I’ve made a copy from the file several times with other names such as file_test1; file_test2 etc etc.

So i could try diffrent files, but that didn’t work out.
So ive re-installed my sketchup on my PC and shut it down completly and i’ve used my SKB file to re-open instead op my SKP and that worked out (while first my SKB didnt work-out at first)

So summary:

  • re-install Sketchup Pro
  • shut down PC
  • open SKB (if you have it)

worked out for me.

This implies that you wouldn’t have installed SketchUp correctly the first time.
Did you richt-click on the installer and choose “run as administrator”?

I don’t think this is the problem. All the programs at our company are installed by our IT specialists and not a single person has problems with sketchup like I had yesterday. Everything is fine, it was just a coincidence that after there were some changes this file would not open. This was both on my computer and that of my colleagues, hence the question in the forum.

This would mean that all my colleagues also have an installation error, while we have been working with this program for more than 10 years. (why than now this installation problem??)

In my opinion, it was just my document and I got lucky with my “solution” that it managed to open that way again. The co-workers also tried to open it again and this also worked without them switching Sketchup off their computer.

I am just passing along, this is what helped me. It may not help everyone.

There are lots of people who have installed the wrong way and don’t have problems for years but then they do…
It has to do with permissions in Windows.

Don’t think this is the case in this problem.
Have a great weekend!

Hi, I am having the same issue - it shows “failed to open the document”. Could you help me please?

The file is nearly all zeroes. Nothing to recover that I can find. Where have you been saving the file as you were working on it? An external drive? The cloud? Do you have the .skb version of the file? Maybe it’ll be recoverable.

I only have 1 day old .skb file and for some reason nothing else from this morning. I was connect to a VPN when the PC turned off, so I assume all the work is just lost. thank you for your help.

Maybe it can be opened. Try changing the extension from .skb to .skp and see what happens. Might be better than starting over.

Very likely that’s what caused the corruption.

If you have to be able to work on a file remotely, use your Trimble Connect storage. Save the file to the internal drive and also publish the model to Trimble Connect. On the remote machine, open the file from Trimble Connect and when you are finished working on it, publish it back to Trimble Connect. That will be much safer than using the VPN or even working on an external drive.

You need to share your file so others can check to see if they can open it.
