SketchUp 2020: Materials Not being colourized, or colourizing incorrectly

3 Plex Model 4-14-2021.skp (11.4 MB)

Here is the model to go with the screenshot showing the siding color issue.

I think @Anssi hit it on the head. Your problems stem from how materials painted onto faces inside a group dominate over ones painted onto the group itself. You have to drill down by opening for edit until you reach the face you want to paint. Then you should be able to change its material.

For example, that’s what I did to change this siding to another material.

I don’t see any troubles on that one. if you check the colorize option and set RGB to (146,139,122) you’ll get something close. Of course it won’t be a perfect match, because the stones have different darkness value but still :

Paul It’s the siding color that I am fighting.

Slbaumgartner,

I am able to change the color using RGB and HSB but it doesn’t change properly when using “match color of object in model or Match color on screen”

sorry, may bad. Would this do ?

it can sometimes be tricky as the colorize function will multiply the base color or tone of a given texture so you’ll have to adjust saturation and darkness by switching to HSL or HSB instead of RGB, after having set a close value

Hmm. On the siding I ran edit on the siding color and then moved the opacity slider down from 100% (which caused a green color to show) and then back up to 100% and that seems to have repaired that face’s color:

I don’t know why other siding faces didn’t follow along…Oh, it’s because there are two separate almond-like siding materials.

Paul,

So why is it the thumbnail to the right of the HLS show a diff. color than the siding?
Are you able to get the Match color of object in model to work?

There are at least three identical siding materials in the model. The red is what changes when I edit the “STONE MOUNTAIN CLAY” material, Blue is “NATURAL ALMOND” and yellow “SANDY TAN”

no, i can’t ! as I said earlier, this function does not work properly and it multiplies the base tone of an image/texture. You’ll have to do some extra adjustments
We are dealing with two different issues here.

Thanks to everyone for answering so quickly.

So If I understand this correctly: The colorize function does not work as it did in 2019, so to the HSL and HSB will need to be used instead?

Has this been fixed yet? The only work around I’ve found is saving it, close it and then open it up again. This is a painstaking process.

Brian,

Thanks for the advice.

This has not been solved for us. Our work around is taking the time to adjust the colors manually as the color match feature doesn’t work as it used to.

The problems in your model were due to identical materials with different names, and materials applied to groups, components and the faces inside them. User error. There has been no change in materials functionality for many, many years.

Anssi,

This is true. When a material has a different name wouldn’t that make it a different material which then can be changed independently from the original material?

Something definitely has changed with the upgrade. With the same materials in 2019 I was able to match color of object in model and match color on screen with no issue. Now when I use those features in 2021 I get colors that don’t look like the color I am trying to match. This doesn’t happen all the time but it does happen enough to make it frustrating.

Thanks

Ryan and Anssi,

Well I 'm not sure what was going on. I tried it again with a fresh file and it worked without issue. I don’t recall doing anything different. Guess I’ll keep on moving forward. I am using 2020 Pro for what it’s worth.

Thanks for the replies on an old thread!

Brian

Did anyone ever figure this out so that we don’t have to do a work-around every time? I had a 2018 perpetual license that was upgraded to 2019. Everything worked fine. I bought a new laptop and had to upgrade to 2022 because my license won’t transfer to a new 2019 download and I can’t get a 2018 download. I have YEARS of work here that now doesn’t work and I’m now paying for a subscription of a perpetual license that I paid for originally. This is very frustrating and it seems that SU is doing nothing about it. If anyone has figured this out, please advise.

by the way, I tried saving a file with my textures and then reopening it. It does not fix the issue.

There is a material in SketchUp 2022 that suffers from a similar issue - you have to manually tick colorise and make a single adjustment to HSB for it to kick back in as it should.
Might be worth trying that as a workaround.

I’ve actually sent in a bug report for this today - I’m not sure if the issue in the older version is the same or not.
