We did try to move forward with 2021, but because of problems with that version we had our IT rolled it back to 2020.
That might be the problem. With classic licenses, when you activate the new serial number and code, you can no longer activate the older version.
I personally have been using Sketchup for many years at home and I can still access all the previous versions that are installed on my computers to this day. Granted this is the first time iâve ever had to rolled it back.
shouldnât the 2020 version that was installed before the new version still work? how do we fix this? we need the 2020 version to do our work.
Yes, but you cannot install the older versions into new computers.
The classic network license only allows the latest activated version, and it updates the moment anyone activates the new version . To roll it back you would need the help of SketchUp support, if possible.
What problems were you having with version 2021? Was the version you tried the latest maintenance release?
Our IT Department is checking with support.
Thanks
With the classic network license, you can only use one version, older installations wonât work, even if it was âonce installedâ and activated. Big difference with the classic âStand Aloneâ version.
Everyone must use the same version. When a new version is/was released, those that had an active maintenance received a new serial and authorisation code for that version. The moment that someone activates that new version a âgrace-periodâ of two months starts where both the old and new version may be activated.
Once the grace period ends, everyone must use the new version.
(Network licenses get activated every startup and then get deactivated when you quit the program, also a major difference with the classic standalone, they only need one âcallâ or âpingâ to the license servers and be activated until you manually remove the license in the welcome screen)
Thatâs why we always recommend to take the trial period and not use the new license info right away.
But hĂ©, when you receive new codes itâs always tempting to check if they work, huh?
To add, if that classic network license still has an active maintenance, you can ask support for downgrading it to a prior version.
But you can also choose to trade it in for the current subscription model with a promo that runs until the end of this year. Then, each user can choose to use each version that uses a sign in to activate (2019, 2020 or 2021)
Network licenses that are migrated in the subscription model loose all powers and wonât work after the conversion, as opposed to the stand alone version that stays perpetual and keeps working.
But then you can get more seats in the deal, up to 4 subscriptions per current network seat.
Itâs no secret that they want to have everyone on the subscription model and move towards a user based licensing system instead of machine based.
With the possibility to have Company Admins and bulk-management of end-users in the AMP (Account Management Portal), it all becomes easier to stay in control and not be dependent of support.
Next would be SSO (Single Sign On), for easier use and access to all of their products:
This is day 3 with no solution. we really need this issue fixed,
its costing us at this point. Ryan Farrell had put in a support ticket as of yesterday evening. is there any solution? We need the 2020 version to work for us not the 2021 version and we need it right away.
So why did you activate 2021 then? What prevents you from using it?
1st Thanks to the SketchUp team for getting us back up and running on 2020,
Anssi,
Just like everyone else (âŠand the way we have been doing in years past), we paid for it and wanted to be on the latest version. But some of the companyâs computer are still on windows 7, the company is slowly upgrading them on their time schedule. 2021 ran poorly on these machines and it complained about that. For the short time we used 2021 we ran across the copy change that was made that a lot of people are complaining about on this board as well as changes to the generate report that we use all the time that I didnât like. It would force us to change our setup that we have been doing for several years.
Now it want to just look for components, not groups in previous versions it took everything. I did bring that up on this board a while back. In our work we use both components and groups and to change 100s of models we have set up to suit the programs changes is not the way to go for us.
Instead of SketchUp making these changes optional or toggles or whatever and just up and changing things we have been using for years is not the way to go in my option. So we are going to take some time and evaluate what works best for us and what we need to do going forward.
I am not a fan of SketchUpâs new subscription payment model, but compared to the old one it allows the use of some older versions (three, I think) alongside the newest one.
âŠneither am I,
But as I found out during this ordeal that not true for network license, they only allow 1 version back.
That one version back part may not be true. As I understand it, as soon as you start to use the new version of a network license, you have 60 days in which to transition everyone to the new version. After that the old one will fail to work.
That is what we ran up on when we activated 2021.
So thereâs no way test it before deciding to implement it or not before issuing it to others in the company if its does not fit in the 60 days space? and if you decide not to upgrade to the latest version as we did you have our problem.
Anyone could run the 30 day trial of a new version, and see if itâs one you all want to switch to. If you do end up in the situation where you need to return to the old one, support can downgrade your license to the old one.
Support can also extend the 60 days, which we have had to do more these days, when transitioning could easily take more than 60 days. In a case like that it would be worth involving your sales rep in the conversation, because support will ask them for approval to extend the 60 days.
