So if I understand you correctly, as long as all my versions have been activated, they will still all work?
Yes ![]()
Having spent the last 15 years teaching SketchUp users that layers aren’t the same as layers in 2D programs, I’m happy to see the term ‘Layers’ go away. The only names I can think of that better describes what Tags do would make Entity Info way too wide.
If folks are were using layers correctly there’s no change to their workflow. Only a word change that really isn’t worth getting too worked up over.
@DaveR, you suggested in another post that the installation of 2020 should still be run as administrator, I seemingly did not have that option in the new setup, did I miss something?
I can still run repair if I did.
Try again. Find the installer, right click on it and look for Run as administrator. It should be there if you are using Windows 10. Definitely do a repair?
Thanks I will.
Yes, you should see dramatic improvements in Outliner performance on Windows. We put a lot of work into making the Outliner work well for complex models.
Although LAYERS in SU-PRO are not strictly as one would expect them to be as in other CAD software, i.e. you physically have the drawn entities/groups on a specific LAYER. SU-PRO LAYERS are only meant to control the VIEW, as everything is meant to be drawn on LAYER-0 & then the grouped items or components view can be moved to a LAYER name so one can turn off/on that view of a LAYER. See link for detailed info:-
SketchUp Training Series: Layers - YouTube
If this is understood, then the name of LAYERS in SU-PRO seems acceptable in my opinion, however, changing this to TAGS, does seem an odd name indeed & I can’t recall anyone asking for LAYERS to be renamed. If the name needed to be changed in the minds of SU-HQ, then perhaps a better word could have been considered & aired to it’s users first ?
As LAYERS are really just views, then the word ‘VIEW’ instead of LAYERS, would seem a more descriptive direction of the softwares function.
I was also wondering if the LAYERS (TAGS …yuke) DIALOGUE PANEL could’ve been somehow combined with the OUTLINER DIALOGUE PANEL ?
I can’t think of a single Sage or SU support person who HASN’T asked for the name change…

Layers aren’t views. Views are what SketchUp calls scenes. Layers are containers separating content, what SketchUp call groups or components.
OMG the zooming is soooooooooo nice. This should be the 1st new feature listed in bold. Wow very cool and relaxing.
You’d thinks but from long experience with teaching SketchUp and dealing with this sort of thing, I can tell you it’s been an uphill battle for years.
Question with the outliner, I use this all the time to name all my object from the default name so I can find things easier. But as I found out the hard way V-Ray does not like (Nor Recommend) you have the outliner panels open when using their plug-ins in 2019. Saving a drawings can take a very long time when I forget to close it.
Same with Scatter it does not like the outliner or the components panel open. Has or will these issues be resolved with these vendors do we know in this version of SketchUP?
The Outliner performance has increased quite drastically. You can try how well it works with our size of models on your machine for these extensions in 2020.
I was perfectly happy with “layers”. I see no difference between the feature in SU and the CAD applications I have used. AutoCad only has a more comprehensive set of display options.
I haven’t used AutoCad much but can you have the same layer used both directly in the model as well as inside of a Block and toggle visibility both inside and outside of the block in one click?
Given it was a quick alternative suggestion than TAGS, the word VIEW seemed to make more sense in my opinion. The collective of lots of VIEWS can be saved as SCENES of course. I’m uncertain if SCENES are widely known as VIEWS ? I stand corrected if this is written down somewhere in the SU-MANUAL…or should I say online help. ![]()
I’m a little excited to see if the zooming in Layout has improved on a Mac
. Going to wait to download though as I’m in the middle of a ridiculously large project using 2019.

Scene typically refers to the document as a whole, what SketchUp calls a model. SketchUp is the only program I know of to use the term Scene for what is essentially a saved view.
‘Scene’ was introduce at the same time as Advance Camera Tools and the previous name ‘Page’ was abandoned in the GUI…
it was to promote the use for Story Boarding, which is why I downloaded the first ‘mac’ version of SU…
