SketchUp 2017 Wish List

I would welcome the ability to establish SU toolbar positions (for native functions and for extensions) such that they consistently remain in place unless reset by the user. This has presented as an issue when a version of SU is installed on a new machine or if it is reinstalled on an existing computer…

It would be ideal if preset user preferences could be saved with any installation and transferred as needed for new installations.

along those same lines it would be nice if the upgrade versions would also import the rubys/extensions/material collections so you don’t have to go through the process of re downloading / collecting / copying / managing the goodies you’ve collected during the previous versions use…
I do however like the ability to not ‘lose’ the previous setup and continue using either version depending on what I’m working on.

sorry all, just noticed that like the 4th or 5th comment in the thread noted this…

I would love 2017 to enable to use different colours for construction lines

I’m sure this has been said before, but I want to put my 2 cents in - make Mac and Windows versions similar and same features…

Can SketchUp please be coded to support multi-core threading…

It would be good if the layers were kept when going from SKP to DWG, much like they are when going the other way, but thank you for the trick - bit tedious with the number of layers, but better than nothing !

Not sure if I am replying to the right post but 2 things I would like: (1) a view option (like the skeleton, X-Ray etc.) That shows all colours/materials in near actual - i.e. when I make a ceiling white, it should generally look white but the rendering gives me a sort of grey - while this is probably pretty true, the human eye will compensate so it would be good to have a temporary view option that showed all materials very close to their assigned colours/materials. (2) I know there is a double click/repeat last action thing but I can never work out what it does and when it works. Can I just get a simple F4 for repeat last action or a right click choice

There is one workaround that I know of - If you put them onto a layer and work in ‘color by layer’ rather than using materials, you can then adjust the layer color and the construction lines within it will match…

If you set ‘show/hide rest of model’ on one shortcut (I use Alt+M) and ‘show/hide similar components’ on another (Alt+N), it’ll make it real quick to switch into isolation when working, and by using a combo of the two shortcuts, it’ll also highlight the difference between what are groups and what are components…just get into the habit of keying those before you begin to edit something…
(It’s worth either looking around with the eye or zoom ex tenting to make sure there’s not a component behind the camera)

By the time the 3D modelling functions in AutoCad, 3DS Max, Archicad, Revit… you name it, have become multithreaded, SketchUp might have become multithreaded too. We have only been waiting about 25 years by now. It might be impossible.

Thanks will give that a try.

This is quite a good idea, I am always working on big model, and multi-core could be a really good idea…

This comes up repeatedly on all the forums and has been addressed each time: as far as computer science knows at this point, it is essentially fruitless to try to multi-thread a 3D modeling app. I believe @Anssi had his tongue in his cheek!

Steve got there while I was drafting an essentially similar response! It might happen about the same time as Hell freezes over, in reality.

Multi-core rendering, as opposed to model creation, is another matter, and already can be multi-threaded.

Only a bit. I remember that this talk started about when the first Pentium processor was released in the early 1990s, together with dual-processor motherboards and computers. The publishers of applications like 3D Studio and AutoCad (different companies at that time) made users understand that a huge performance increase would be just around the corner. After that, repeatedly, vendors have advertised multithreaded features, but when you read the small print, it really just applies to things like disk I/O or photorealistic rendering.

I made it’s own thread before I noticed this one, but I’ll put it in here to be doubly sure it gets noticed!

I think the best thing that could possibly happen in the next release of
SketchUp would be the dimensions in layout “sticking” for lack of a
better term, to the model in which they are attached to. They do this
within sketchup, but when something is dimensioned in layout, then the
model for example gets wider or something, all of the subsequent
dimensions in layout need to be manually re-positioned and re-stuck to
the reference points which are being measured. I design custom furniture
for a living, using exclusively sketchUp and Layout, and especially
with custom, the customers are forever changing things, and it would
save SO MUCH time if the dimensions updated themselves. Someone has informed me this is called associated dimensions.

How about having trays that were able to accept toolbars in some way? Imagine having all the extrusion and lofting/skinning tools on a single tray that disappeared when not in use.
Similarly all your rendering tool icons, as well as all the associated helper extensions and stuff like specialist material libraries. Maybe SketchUp 2020?

I realize that trays are an element of Microsoft 's libraries, but for the sake of sanity can’t we have something at least conceptually similar on the Mac version? The GUIs continue to drift farther and farther apart!

(Or not have trays on Windows. Just sayi’n.)
