SketchUp 2017 Wish List

If you consider each model might have a couple dozen materials (i.e. automobiles) and be comprised of many components… that would get old quick. Even just trying to get all the tires the same “black” and the windows the same “glass” ugh.

I know this has it’s own topic, but please make INFERENCING an option in future versions. I’ve spent too much time escaping out of an overly-aggressive inference suggestion. Sites with topography edits take 50% more time now. Can we roll back to SU2015 style inferencing?

Switch your ‘camera’ to Parallel Projection.

Remove doubles of imported CAD geometry. More of a time saving request.

Components should be able to be stored outside the model and referenced with option to embed.

Describe more your thinking on this. You can already store components outside the model and embed them in the model when they are used.

Sure, It would be very beneficial if components could be “linked” and not “embedded”. Then when the component is changed the model it is used in would update as well as any other model it is used in. This would save time and reduce file sizes.

To be more clear I know the component can be reloaded, but this(as far as I can tell) is not an automatic process. Not everyone who works on the models are as thorough as they should be.
I do a lot of design with adobe suite and envy its automatic updates of files even while they are open. I place art into my models and it changes frequently. If materials could be linked and thus update automatically as well that would solve a whole other set of problems.

Provide a native way to toggle endpoints ON/OFF via a keyboard shortcut.
We shouldn’t have to resort to a plugin for this.

It’s rather strange that this one is missing from the long list of options.

Sketchup is great for 3D modelling, but Sketchup is also great for 2D vector drawing for both CAD and illustration purposes or a mix of both.

I’d like to be able to have a tools that would facilitate a standard Sketchup 2D workflow:

  • Be able to choose middle button for pan and shift+middlebutton (or leftclick+middlebutton) for orbit.
  • Lock orbiting so I can only pan making sketchup act as if viewport was 2D;
  • Use inferences nicelly when in 2D orthoprojection;
  • Have the same inferences on guides that we currently have on lines (mid point makes no sense here);
  • Infer to the guideline that get’s generated when you create a point guide (mid point makes sense here);
  • Allow for linestyles (dotted, dashed, etc…);
  • Allow for the same leader and dimension styling we get in Layout;
  • Import raster and vector PDF files;
  • Export/Import to and from SVG;
  • SVG or other vector based materials;
  • Export as AI files (adobe illustrator)
  • Batch export scenes as 2D textured skp/svg/pdf/dwg/dxf/other vector files;
  • Batch export components as skp/svg/pdf/dwg/dxf/other vector files (3d pdf too, and flattened SVG maybe based on XY component axis);
  • Batch import skp/svg/pdf/dwg/dxf/other vector files as sketchup components:
  • Batch reload components from skp/svg/pdf/dwg/dxf/other vector files;
  • A new batch update exported files for skp/svg/pdf/dwg/dxf/other vector files
  • Control draw order on groups components that have coplanar or zfighting faces;
  • Allow for Layout’s model tab to manage models too and not only scenes inside a model (ability to change the model in the viewport for another model VS currently being exclusivelly able to change the scene in the viewport for another scene from the same model).

These features would be excellent to erradicate CAD from my life, but would also allow for a much greater Vector graphics designer workflow. Both are useful for architects and a lot of designers that could find new ways of using sketchup.

I hope Sketchup 2017 have many material preset, which still can be edited when needed.
This can help saving time to find the material setting for each materials.
and also better if we can share material setting easily between sketchup member
just my2c

I would be very happy if v2017 would have lots of bugfixes.
For instance à bugfix / solution for the outliner. If you run à plugin, and forgot to close the outliner, its slowing down the execution of the plugin à lot.

Also, there Is à bug related to styles with sketchup & layout. And with not displaying the scale of the view when rightclicking or using the wrong scale for à view after choosing by rightclicking. All have been reported à while ago.

Make the Query Tool a native tool or at least include the script in the installer package.

Perhaps make it a SU Pro only feature.
Pro users shouldn’t have to go on an Easter Egg hunt in the Extension Warehouse for elemental functions.

is it possible to increase the parameters/ info to connect to components to export the model in IFC format in a way that they can be read in BIM sharing platforms? Actually it is possible to maintain only components name, IFC type, all the other info are lost.

Why not insert a new section tool in a way to control the section depth? This will be very helpful for drawings.

Or multiple active sections in the same drawing context.

Eneroth I was trying to find that request you made a while ago of using standard sketchup tools to edit a section cut face until it was a polyfaced section… That is still a very needed request do you know where to find it?

I did the same thing (looking for) after reading that request. I think it was about a year ago.

I remember It was about a single section surface.
Now it makes me think, wouldn’t a realtime section cut of a “SketchUp Section Sollid” be an option for a request, … to realtime trim a model?

The post you made was in a Thread I believe John Bacus started about user’s feature requests for one of Sketchup Versions…

I can’t find it either, maybe it was on an old forum…

I just remember some of mine and this one. It nailed it.
