Shadows Projecting when Editing Component / Group

macOS Sonoma 14.7.2
M2 Studio Max
SketchUp 25.0.570

When I edit a component / group with ‘Hide Rest of Model’ Shadows are projected even though the objects are not visible.

I see something like this too. Shadow casting doesn’t seem to apply to all the elements up in the model hierarchy, and the shadows look like something that you once upon a time could see that required the “shadow strings fix” extension to repair.

Although, yes I agree this is a display bug, … by now long time SketchUp modelers should be in the habit of using a dedicated fast model “work” scene using a dedicated fast style with presentation styles (like shadows and edge profiles, etc.,) switched off. Presentation features and styles would or should only be on in presentation scenes.

I think this is a known bug with the new graphics engine.

Yes Dan, I have 4 scenes setup for various work scenarios all in my ‘fast’ modeling style - but sometimes you are in LO and you notice something that needs a quick clean up and you switch back to that exact view and want to make a quick change…

It’s a bug no matter if I am using the software exactly as you would prescribe me to or not. Not to mention often I am sharing a screen with a client and will want to tweak something in real time — so I just work wherever I’m at to get the change done and carry on with my walk through.

Objects that can’t be seen shouldn’t be casting shadows.

I am having the exact same issue! Any leads? Just updated to pro 2025. It’s highly irritating as for quick presentations I often make screen grabs…

Turn off shadows… still isn’t fixed and it is a bug.

This is a bug report in our system already (SKOR-19579). I don’t know when it is going to be worked on.

(copy&paste) If you need to show the correct shadows, the current solution would be to … go back a version (or two, three) … why i still need to fall back to sup22 for my ‘correct’ shadowstudies.

Probably Copy then Paste in Place…

But that’s drastic, and not really what the bug is about. This happens when editing a component and you have shadows turned on and you hide the rest of model. It doesn’t affect shadow accuracy, only how it shows shadows cast by objects hidden when editing a component.

I copied and pasted the same reply from an almost identical post, didnt see a copy in place option here

Butt well, lets agree to disagree. I did notice the shadows casted in sup2025 where not exactly the same as in sup22. Today i updated sup2025 so it might have been improved, which i still need to test :crossed_fingers:

Ok, then, I thought you were suggesting to copy paste your model into an older version, not that you were copy / pasting a reply from another thread.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Regardless, this thread isn’t about shadow studies or accuracy, it is about shadows showing up when editing a component.

Good luck with the update.

Oh, i have misunderstood then, my apologies. I thought shadows were activated before editting groups/components. In that case it is indeed weird shadows would show while they are deactivated.

Shadows are activated, but things that are not visible (when editing a component, with hide rest of model active) should not cast shadows. That is what this bug is. Reported here and for those on the developer platform also there.

@bmike
This is very annoying and hard to work around. Hopefully, Trimble will have a fix in the next utility upgrade, which can’t come soon enough for me.
