Can someone tell me how to set s default style that I can apply to new models. I have already created one but when I start a new model, I do not see my style anywhere. This just started happening in 2025.
Create the style you want in a new model and adjust any other settings, like turn off length snapping, set the units, remove the scale model, choose a back face colour etc etc etc then save that as a template and set it to be your default template.
Ok, I set things the way I wanted them and I saved the template but I have not figured out how to make it my default template! What the heck am I missing?
BTW: can you tell me how to make a glass texture have a color?
Box, I consider you one of, if not the best, adviser/sage on this and the SketchUcation forums.
When you used Save as Template there’s a tick box to make it your default.
Also, once you edited and updated the style for your template make sure to save a copy of the style into the Default styles collection. Set the Styles panel to In Model, open the secondary pane and set it to Default styles, drag your custom style thumbnail from the In Model pane to the Default Styles collection.

How do I open the secondary panel?
And another stupid question: how do I create a quote in this forum?
Click on the button at the top right of the Styles panel.
FWIW, this also works in the Components panel as well as Materials on Windows.
Dave, here is what I did and the results. I am beginning to feel really stupid that I cannot get things done right.
As I wrote:
The key word is thumbnail.
Change list view to thumbnail view.
Thanks agin Dave.
I have used SketchUp for a good while without knowing some of this stuff. As I said before, I am feeling really dumb about some oh these issue.
You’re welcome. Time to dig in to this basic stuff. Lots to see.
What basic stuff are you suggesting and where do you suggest I go to learn things like this? As I said, I have used SketchUp for several years and was not aware of the things you pointed out. Are they new to 2025?
The thing about saving templates and saving styles is not new at all. Those features have been around for more than 15 years.
As forwhere to learn about stuff, I guess I would start with the SketchUp Help files. With SketchUp open tap F1 to open Help.
As for what is new in SketchUp 2025 you could look at the Release Notes and also check out the live stream video from yesterday on the SketchUp YouTube channel.
I made some changes to my style but I do not know how to save it so that if i create a new file and then select my style, it uses the updated version.
Also, when I start up SKetchUp is there a way that I can select my start when I start a new model?
HOpe I made this clear.
Set up a blank file using the style as you’ve edited it. Also make sure you’ve updated the style in the model. Then use File>Save as template to save it. Make sure the box for Use as default template is ticked.
When you open a new session of SketchUp it should give you your default style as the first option.
If you click on File>New to start a new file, it’ll open with that default template and thus the style you set.
This is all exactly the same as it’s been for at least two decades.
Ok, I understand and know this has been the case for a long time, but, from the Home Screen how do I start a new model using my default template! I do not see that as an option on the Home Screen.
Ok, maybe I am getting confused (making a mistake) between styles and templates. Is there an option of saving a blank file as a template?
BTW: I have used SketchUp for several years now (although I have been away for several months and maybe I am losing my memory - as I am growing older ) and I do not remember creating a template and I really appreciate your response and your patience.
I already showed you how to save a blank SketchUp file as a template!
Can you tell me why you aren’t even trying to use the instructions I’ve given?
Sorry Dave. Somehow I messed up. I am truly embarrassed.
OK Dave, I finally got it all sorted out and save the style and created a template that now shows up when I launch SketchUp.
Again, thanks for your patience and sticking with me. I now have it working correctly.
