Sections and scenes

I have two scenes. One is a plan section; the other is an exterior perspective with no section. However, when I go from the perspective scene to the floor plan, the section is not showing in the floor plan. When I turn the section on and update, the plan is fine, but when I return to the perspective the section is now appearing there also …

Can you share the .skp file? It sounds to me as if you need to create a new style which displays the active section cut but haven’t done so.

Which version of SketchUp are you working in? Your profile says you have SketchUp 2022 with a Pro subscription but you posted in the Sketchup for Web category.

When I retired I cancelled my pro subscription. I just got Go last week so I could start to learn 3d printing for sculpture. However, I also promised my daughter I’d do some work on a small addition for her house and Im starting to set up some scenes. That’s when I ran into this problem. Skp attached.

Please update your forum profile. As it is it just creates confusion.

So as I suspected, the style you are using doesn’t have section cuts enabled. You need to create a new style with Section Cuts enabled to use for those scenes with sections. In the Styles panel click on the + in the circle to create a new style.

Edit that style to include Section Cuts and use it for the plan view scene. If you make any other scenes with section cuts remember to select that style so the cut will show.

Here’s the updated file.

Thank you!

I don’t recall ever having to create a new style, I simply updated the scene. Is this unique to Go?

No. Not unique to Go. Most of the shipped styles have section cuts already active so it wouldn’t be an issue.

Thank you for helping me understand.

The GO version requires creating a new style for every little change; for example tweaking the shadows from 9 am to 2 pm.

The Pro version has a much better coordination of styles and scenes; for example tweaking the shadows from 9 am to 2 pm just requires a click to update without having to create an entirely new style.

The GO version has an update button, but I don’t understand how it’s supposed to be used.

Shadows are not part of the style so no, you don’t need a new style for each change of the time from 9 am to 2 pm. You can create different scenes showing the shadows at different times using the exact same style.

You can look at the style properties that would require updating the style in the Styles panel.

Here, changing the time for the shadows does not modify the style.

The UI is a little different but the management of scenes and styles is effectively the same between the web and desktop versions.

You do have the option of right clicking on a scene tab in the desktop version to update the scene. It skips showing you the Properties to Update panel. If you choose to update a scene from the Scenes panel you do get the Properties to Update panel, though. Using that panel you can choose which properties get updated without having to update all of them.

OK, I’m starting to get it now. Adjusting to the UI. Thanks.

I hope you’re getting some sort of compensation from SketchUp for all the time and excellent help you provide.

You’re quite welcome.

I just checked my profile and it is up to date showing GO and Free version. Maybe my old profile is still floating around the Trimble system?

Well, this is what your profile shows.

Maybe you updated it but didn’t hit Save at the bottom.

I didn’t need to update because it already said GO and Free. Where do I go to see that profile? If I can get there I’ll change it.

Where did you see that?

Click on the E in the cyan circle at the top right of the forum page. Then click on the person icon, then Preferences, the Profile.

I see my profile (I was looking at my Trimble profile), but I can’t seem to find the edit button.

Just scroll down through the Profile page and edit the fields.

I updated and saved, but it still says SketchUp Pro. I’ll check again tomorrow.

This is what I see now. Much better.

Hello @DaveR I’m using the free version(web). I’ve been trying to do kinda the same thing. Is it that the web version is unsupported or I’m I missing a step? TIA

It works in SketchUp for Web so I guess you must be missing a step. You have to put the section plane inside a group or component. Here I made a component to include the body, nut, and ceramic cone components in the center spark plug and put the section plane inside it.
