Scan to Design (Lidar Scan) Question

Hi, I have Sketchup for Ipad and Scan to Design feature. (know basics regarding operation)

My work flow for surveying a site with existing facilities always has been, lidar scan with Polycam, import into Morpholio Trace and draft Plan, Elevation, Sections with dimensions. I can then build Sketchup model with it, or draft CAD drawings as necessary.

Problem regarding Polycam with my Ipad pro (5th Generation) is, it crashes time to time processiong scans even if i segment the scan with the Expand feature. Nonetheless, I was able to complete surveys, say around 50m x 20m site with 3 to 4 single-story buildings inside and out.

I wonder if I can replace Polycam with Sketchup Scan to Design (Lidar Scan)

I tried Sketchup Scan myself for my living room for tests and it worked fine; however I am always reluctant to apply it instead of Polycam on the actual job site, with the fear of unexpected happenings such as crash or anything else that might happen, especially with the weather out there in my region, loosing time and efforts for doing it again.

I would appreciate any experience of Scan to Design in similar circumstances

Thanks

Hi there, how comes you use Morpholio? Can you not add the scan into SU and just trace it there?

I do small scans and import into SU.

Hi,

because I need to document it in plan, section, etc. first.
(I guess it can be the other way, using Layout from Sketchup, having 3D first and do 2D later.)

Anyways, I think the Lidar scan is good for the base site drawing at times where there is no base site drawing given, I say upto schematic design phase.

As you said, I can import the scan it into SU, but Lidar scans are not clean.

I think the lidar scan quality is similar between Polycam and SU, of course depending on the setting.

I was just wondering how the scanning will go in the actual surveys. I guess I have to give it a try and how it goes.
