Rotating a Section Plane

Hi everybody

Just wondering if there is any way to select a section plane in order to rotate it?

I have top, side and front section planes as part of my template, but recently I have started to change the model axis and obviously the section planes do not follow. I realise I can delete and recreate section planes, but it would be easier if I could rotate them and thought it was worth asking

Thanks.

Yes. You can simply click on it, get the Roate tool, set the rotation axis and rotate it like you’d rotate any othe robject.

Ive been trying that Dave - is there a particular spot to click on?

I just click on the section plane but you can click on one of the section symbols at the corner. Make sure you are in the same context as the section plane.

Here I clicked on the section plane.

Thank you.

I was wondering if I could rotate them without them being active? Here is my standard template with the 3 section planes where I have only changed the axis. I usually just leave them inactive until I need them as I only use them for ‘Create Group From Slice’. I guess I need to make them active before I can rotate them?

I will do a bit of experimenting.

Okay - so I can rotate the front and side sections to the new axis if I make them active, but purely of interest I cannot see a way to rotate the top section because it doesn’t have anything to inference to.

You just need to select them.

I see what you’re asking. You can’t rotate a section plane in its plane (about the blue axis for the plan section). Also the edges of the section plane will be aligned with the default orientation of the axes.

They respond to tools just like other geometry.

But you can’t rotate the plan section so its edges are parallel to the changed axes nor to the edges of the block object.

Thanks all. Got it for front & side section planes :folded_hands:

So there is no way to have the top section plane parallel with the red & green axis once they’ve been changed from default.

Not as far as I can see. You would need to place the section plane after rotating the axes.

But even then, the plane follows the default red and green axis?

No. The plane aligns with the model axes, then. Here in this example I rotated the axes off their default and then placed the section plane.

Here I’ve reset the axes to their default orientation.

That’s strange.

When I change my axis, the top section still aligns with the default axis?

Here, I have changed the default axis.

Weird.

I just tried to do it again and I get the same behavior. It didn’t do that the first time in the same model. I opened a different model, moved the axes and did this:

Puzzling.

Okay - I give up

I will just create new section planes and accept the top one will be off axis. It doesn’t actually matter as long as its still horizontal.

Nice model in your video by the way :+1:

Thank you.

I don’t know why it seems to be working differently sometimes.

There has to be a reason and a way to get the top section to align with the new red & green axis.

Even though it doesn’t matter, I cannot rest and its driving me nuts :upside_down_face:

Don’t let that happen.
If I remember right this has been discussed recently with the same outcome: weird.
