Reload Component Doesn't work

In SketchUp 2024 and 2025, I haven’t been able to get the Reload feature to work.

Here’s what I do:

  1. I create a component, right-click it, and save it as a separate file.
  2. I open that saved component file and make a change, like updating the material.
  3. When I go back to the original file, I should be able to right-click the original component and select “Reload” to update it with the new changes.

But for some reason, it’s not working. It just freezes SU and then crashes it.

I’ve tried with several different files, and creating clean files from scratch.

Using the SketchUcation plugin manager i disabled Vray, since that has caused issues in the past.

At a loss here.

Does this show the steps you are following?

As you can see in the video, this worked for me. I normally don’t use this method for component saving and reuse so I had to practice once.

I wonder if it is some other extension. I have Vray enabled on my end. Is your component a very complex one?

Indeed that is the method I’m using. My geometry is just a couple cubes.
It just be another plugin. I’ll keep unloading until I find it. Thanks for the reply and video. Good to know it isn’t altogether broken. Just for me. For now.

Maybe it’s the way you’re holding your tongue.

You might start by temporarily disabling all extensions by temporarily renaming the Plugins folder so they won’t load. If you still have issues with the reloading thing, you would know it’s not likely due to an extension.

Did you install SketchUp correctly by right clicking on the downloaded installer and using Run as administrator?

I tried the steps on Mac and Windows, and it’s working ok for me.

Seems it’s not an inherent bug. Something about me that software just doesn’t like.

:joy: I think you might be onto something. It’s the SU lottery.
Yes I made sure to install as admin. It’s a work computer and it is possible that even with admin privileges I may be locked out of something—that was the case at my last job.
Regardless, I’ll do the plugin folder rename thing and see what’s crack’n after that.
Thanks again

So this morning i renamed the plugins folder for both version and tried again. Still no joy. It just freezes up 2024 and immediately crashes 2025.

When i run SU as Admin it works. So i’m going to reinstall as Admin…again…and hope it works. Will keep ya’ll posted.

Must be the file…
Reinstalled as Admin…again…and everything works. Until i try it with the original files that were giving me problems. Works fine with generic tests. Not with this other file :frowning:

Can you post one of the problem files? Does it also crash if you try the “Fix problems” button beside the “Purge unused” one?

I just did some more testing and it no longer appears to be the file. I attempted to replace with a built-in SU component.
I uninstalled Vray again–no luck. So i uninstalled Enscape preview and I was back in business!
I reinstalled Vray and it still works!!
I’m going to try an older version of Enscape. But i am almost certain that was the culprit.

I can now confirm that the culprit was Enscape-4.5.0.277-preview1
In SU 2024 is rolled back to Enscape-4.4.0.452;
In SU 2025 i don’t have any Enscape.

So there we go.
