What you describe sounds like an issue with the way you are working in Windows, not a SketchUp bug.
Do you mean you are creating a new folder called Fred?
That folder should be in the directory you put it in. If you go to File>Open you should be able to find that folder with no problem. You could also just open the file since it’s in your recent files.
Windows won’t delete a file if you currently have it open. You should get a warning message. That’s no bug either.
No. That’s not what I was showing. I had clicked Save as… and was asking if you are using New Folder to create your sub-directory.

What I am saying is that if I save a new design in a newly created directory (FRED) using the Save As… command it is no problem
If I now want to export the same file in 3D I go File/Export/3D and look for the FRED directory where I saved the .skp file I cannot find that directory (FRED) I had just created.
The strange thing is that if I use Windows File Manager I still cannot find the newly created directory (FRED)
Its only after exiting and restarting SketchUp again I can see it from within the program
This is the first time you’ve used the word ‘export’. At least that part now makes sense.
Here I’ve used Save as… and created a new folder called FRED.
I saved the current file into it.
Then I went to File>Export>3D Model… and navigated to the directory where I created the folder called FRED. And it shows up as expected.
When I first chose Export>3D Model it went to a different directory than the one where my models are saved. That’s because I have different directories established for exports and SketchUp model files. The sub-directory called FRED shows up exactly where I created it, though. No need to exit SketchUp and restart it.
