[Plugin] Universal Threads Generator for SketchUp

Hi everyone,

I’ve developed a SketchUp plugin that automates the creation of threaded parts (bolts, nuts, internal threads, etc.).

This tool is universal because it generates threads from a custom tooth profile, making it compatible with any type of thread, including multi-start threads.

I made a demo video showcasing how it works:

The video is in french (turn the YouTube subtitles and auto-translation on) but the extension is multilingual.

:small_blue_diamond: Features:

:white_check_mark: Generate threaded rods, nuts, and internal threads in just a few clicks
:white_check_mark: Works with any thread profile – metric, imperial, trapezoidal, custom, etc.
:white_check_mark: Supports multi-start threads
:white_check_mark: Adjustable pitch, diameter, and length

The plugin is available on two places :

(I made a little portal website easier to share on plugintop.top, but @DanRathbun pointed that the .top domain is globally know as suspicious, beginner mistake :sob:).

If you have the use and want to get it for free, I’m offering a few free licenses in exchange for an honest review here and on the purchase page.

If you’re interested, just send me a message!

Would love to hear your thoughts! :rocket:

I ask Copilot: Who is the .top domain?

The AI responds citing wikipedia.org:

The .top domain is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) introduced in 2014. It is managed by Jiangsu Bangning Science & Technology Co., Ltd., based in Nanjing, China. This domain extension is open for registration by anyone and is often used for branding and marketing purposes due to its simplicity and memorability.

On 16 July 2024 ICANN issued a Notice Of Breach to the registry for failing to respond to DNS abuse reports and failing to pay fees.

However, it’s worth noting that .top domains have faced some criticism for being associated with phishing and malware activities, leading to restrictions by certain security vendors.

I run Malwarebytes security software which bans the entire .top domain.

Thankyou Renaud. Often purchase plugins and are duds but I took a chance with yours based upon your video.
I have been chasing a ‘Threading’ plugin that is easy to use and works - this plug-in was worth the $$.

Have used you plugin to model different size threads used in the “Multiboard” organisational system, to design my own accessories.
Thanks again.

Thank you so much @frankquinti ! (I started coding this plugin for my own 3D printing needs ).

If you have any pictures of your creations, could you share them?
I am often pleasantly surprised by what others do with my products (sometimes uses I haven’t thought of) ! :folded_hands::smiley:

Hi Renaud!

Thanks for sharing your plugin — it looks really impressive. I work quite a lot with SketchUp and threaded parts, and your approach with custom profiles and multi-start threads is exactly what I’ve been missing.

I’d be very happy to test the plugin and provide an honest review here and on the purchase page. If you still have free licenses available, I’d really appreciate the opportunity to try it out.

Thanks in advance, and great work on the extension!

Hello @Renaud ,
I use your extension for 3D printing, and it works very well!
The only thing I am missing is the option to choose standard threads.
Now I have to search the internet for the dimensions of metric threads. Internal or external. Then I have to draw that profile in SketchUp before using your extension. It would save a lot of time if the extension would have a list of standard profiles to choose from.
Maybe it’s a lot to ask for, but it would be a premium upgrade to your extension.
Greetings from the Netherlands,

Herman.

Hi kolpakov77,

Thanks a lot for your message and for the kind words :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m glad the plugin looks useful for your workflow. That’s exactly why I built it.

At the moment I’m no longer offering free licenses, as the extension is already priced quite low to keep it accessible for everyone, on Gumroad or Payhip.

If you decide to try it, I’d still love to hear your feedback or see what you build with it.

Thanks again for reaching out!

Hi Herman,

Thanks a lot for your message — and I’m really glad to hear the extension works well for your 3D printing projects :slightly_smiling_face:

About standard threads, that’s a very fair suggestion and something I actually considered when designing the plugin.

The main reason I didn’t include predefined ISO/metric/UNC/etc. libraries is practical:

In real-world use, standard threads are rarely modeled directly in SketchUp.

• For assembly screws and bolts, we usually don’t model the threads at all, otherwise the geometry becomes very heavy and slows SketchUp down quickly (too many faces).
• For 3D printing, standard thread dimensions are often too small and too tight anyway. They usually need extra clearance or even larger tooth profiles to print reliably and fit properly. So most people end up redesigning or modifying the profile every time.

Because of that, a big “standard thread library” would add quite a lot of complexity to the extension, while not being very useful in practice.

That’s why I chose the custom profile approach instead — it gives full control and is better suited for functional or printable parts, especially when you need bigger, more forgiving thread shapes.

That said, I understand the convenience of presets, but in my opinion it’s not worth the extra-work.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback — I really appreciate it!
