Placing a guide line on a surface behind another object, or?

Apologies for the newbie question first. Simple, right? I want to place a guide line or more specifically, reproduce the angle that is on surface “1” onto surface “2”. What would be the best approach to doing that? Thanks so much!

Are they separate groups?

You could drag a guideline of the angled edge of 1 and place it on the surface of 2 and then trace it.

You posted in the Pro category but your forum profile says you are using SketchUp for Web (Free only). Which version are you using?

Yes, separate groups.

Pro, I will be sure and change that.

Do as I described and then open the second group and trace the guideline. Use Push/Pull to remove the part above.

Edit: Are 1 and 2 supposed to be identical? If so, you could replace 2 with a copy of 1. If you’re made them instances of the same component in the first place they would both have received the angled end when you edited 1.

That is actually how I ended up resolving it but thought there might be a better way that I was missing. Thank you!

Which way?

Created a guideline on edge 1. Moved it to 2 holding the axis arrow to get it there. Double clicking on object 2 to open the group, tracing the guideline and using push pull. Thanks again.

What if you just reference the angled edge on 1 and place the guideline directly on 2 instead of placing it on 1 and then mmoving it to 2?

I must be daft! That looks great! That said, I am struggling with how to accomplish this, even with the vid! Can you explain the steps? Is there a shortcut key in there somewhere?

Just click and release on the edge and then move the cursor in the desired direction. You can lock the direction with a cursor key if needed. Then click again to place the guideline. You can also place the guideline at a specific distance from the starting edge. Begine as above, let go of the mouse, type the distance and press Enter.

Woooo! I’m gonna like it around here! Thanks so much. I fall a little bit more in love with SU on a daily basis! Thanks again.

You can also use inference directly without guidelines if what you need is an edge that splits the front face at the plane of the face on the other object:

  • Open the object for editing
  • Choose the line tool
  • Move your cursor on one vertical edge and when the “on edge” tooltip appears hold down Shift
  • Click on the face on the other object
  • Repeat for the other vertical edge.

Works like a charm! I put that one in my bag of tricks as well! Thank you, thank you!
