Onedrive doesn’t work like it used to

After I downloaded 2025 SU I can only open it on my laptop, not my desktop. When I try to open a file I created on my laptop on my desktop I get a file version warning saying I need to upgrade to 2025 (which I did, twice now). I can open a NEW file on my desktop in 2025 but nothing I’ve already started working on from my laptop.

How are you opening the file? If you open SketchUp 2025, then use File/Open, to open a file that came from the laptop, do you still see the warning?

I can’t open 2025 anymore from my desktop. It doesn’t load at all. When I open a file it converts to 2022 version

Try tapping the Windows key, and search for SketchUp 2025. When you see it listed, does it then open ok?

this is what I get

Someone else had that problem recently. Here is what seemed to work for them:

Try going to this folder in File Explorer:

%AppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\

Make sure SketchUp is closed, and delete the webcache folder and the login_session.dat file. Reopen SketchUp and see if signing in gets you to the Home Screen.

I couldn’t find the file you mentioned, but i did uninstall SU 2025 and reinstall it again. Now I can open it, however all my templates that I made on my desktop in both SU and Layout (titleblock etc) did not transfer over. Do i need to make them again for each device? I’ve never had to do that before with other upgrades.

I meant to say the templates I made on my LAPTOP. For some reason nothing I do on my laptop is transferring to my desktop

Are the two machines on the same network? Do you have a profile server on the network?

I don’t know what a profile server is? Both devices use same network. I signed in and out of both versions and started over. Nothing seems to work.

Whatever you do on your laptop doesn’t just magically transfer from one machine to the other.

You need to either have a network drive that both machines point to for the templates or you need to copy the templates from one machine to the other.

IIRC you can locate the templates folder in Settings / Preferences and place your copies there.

With MS Windows, one machine can serve as a profile server, so that you can sign into any machine on the network and have common access to your application settings & documents. This is called a roaming profile. The “root” of the roaming profile is your user “Home” directory.

On Windows, SketchUp saves most of it’s settings in your user roaming profile folder hierarchy also known as the %AppData% path.

That said, the profile server may need to be running a version of Windows Server edition.

If you do not have this scenario, then like Mike said, you’ll either need to use Network Attached Storage, a thumb drive or some other means to share your model files, templates, etc.

You can use Trimble Connect to share the model files at least. (Not sure about templates.)

I’m not understanding everything you’re saying here…

Ive used SU since 2017 and with every upgrade I’ve never had any issues. I saved a new template from my laptop into the template preferences. But it does not show up on the desktop.

I open a shared file and I have two different templates

I’m sorry, but separate machines have never magically shared SketchUp resources.
I do not know what it is that you believe you remember.

It is possible to set up shared folders on your machines, but you would have to log into the shared folder from the other machine and be on the same network.

Yes I use One Drive and have the same network. I save my files on my laptop and created templates and saved them as new templates. But when I open the same file on my desktop it’s not the same. Could it be a problem with onedrive not syncing? Even though it says everything is synced.

Sure, it is possible. However, there have been issues in the past where cloud drives have started syncing whilst SketchUp was saving, and the model files get corrupted. So, we strongly advise against saving directly into 3rd party cloud drives.

Your subscription comes with space on Trimble Connect, which is designed to work with SketchUp. There is a new menu item on the File menu for 2025 for this. And the Welcome window allows opening directly from Trimble Connect. I suggest giving it a try.
